Hi Anonymous, there is a whole laundry list of could be's, to start shovels were infamous for getting extremely poor top end longivity, 15,000 miles was average before a top end overhaul was necessary. That being said I would start with ignition spark plugs should be clean and dry the electrode should have a tan color and the Harley Davidson plug number is 5R6A gapped at .040" plug cables should be carbon fibre core and radio resistant. Coil should have no cracks and a primary resistance of 2.5 to 3.1 ohms the secondary resistance should be 10,000 to 12,000 ohms. Battery should be charged 12.5 volts or better and connections should be clean and tight negative cable should have a clean conection to the frame. Alternator should put out 13.8 to 14.7 volts DC to the battery. Check for bad intake seals they will have a wet or damp residue at the intake ports and bad exhaust gaskets that will have powder burn like residue at the exhaust port. Check the carb for proper float level and make sure jets and air passages are not blocked or clogged and check for water in the bowl, clean as necessary. Ckeck to make sure the accelerator pump is working and the choke plate is completely horizontal. Check the fuel tank and filter for contamination and repair as necessary. Those are the main actors in the laundry list show. Good luck

No Engine I know of has a 1,2,3,4, fitting I am sure you have the firing order connected wrong, plus your description point to the firing order as well. Cheers, Malcolm Campbell.

Engine idles smoothly but at higher rpm it faulters and back fires out of exhaust and runs rough

back fires out of exhaust implies too much gas at high end. caused by : dirty air filter, carb setup wrong(high float), ignition trouble.
a miss from poor ignition on the next stroke can be too wet even when the carb is set too lean so rule out the ignition problem. rule out the air filter problem. clean carb.

Runs rough at start up,then runs okay, Hesitiates momentarily when moving from a stopped position. Occasionally wont start and runs rough, then runs okay. This problem is intermittent

you have a bad injector, if you have A... as it states on the top of the motor 2.8, 3.1 L MULTI PORT and dies or idles really rough and the exhaust smells like strong gas. most likely you have an injector that has shorted or is shorting out and from my experiences usually after a road trip or using fuel injector cleaner or buying a used car. it will cause half the motor to not run or run poorly VERY POORLY or even burn out 1 injector fuse out of 2 under hard acceleration or idles but as soon as you touch the gas pedal dies. but only if it is a MULTI PORT fuel injected motor. ive heard you want to try and replace them with bosch injectors out of a 2.9l ford bronco/ranger. only attempt if you got the mechanical know how sometimes if not done right will leak gas because of the injectors being kinda different length. research before attempting.

5.7 gm runs rough and back fires through the intake

I agree with the timing. Your timing is way advanced causing pre-detonation and throwing your flame front and/ or unburnt fuel out through your valves and into your intake manifold. If you have gone off-roading a lot or someone has been beating on your engine or engine compartment while the engine is running your knock sensor will advance your timing to try and fix that. I agree that you should get that thing on a scanner ASAP but I can almost guarantee that you need a timing job and possibly a new knock sensor.
