Hi Anonymous, if you are going to work on your bike your going to need tools, and the first and best tool you will ever buy is a service manual. It has step by step instructions, how too's, pictures, special tools you will need, torque specs, special products (loc-tite, sealants, cleaners ect.) and wiring diagrams, along with trouble shooting tips. That being said here is the short version: Drain primary oil, remove primary cover, clutch pak, primary chain, compensating sproket, and alternator rotor to access stator. Good luck

SOURCE: change a stator

First secure the bike on a lift. disconnect battery.remove standard footpeg.Remove standard shifter. Remove all allen head bolts from outer primary cover. Some bolts are longer so keep track of where they go.Two bolts on the primary inspection cover also hold the outer to the inner primary case, so remove the cover. Now remove the outer primary case. The clutch, primary chain, adjuster, and compensating sprocket must be reoved as a single unit.Once you have done this take a rag and grasp the rotor and slide it off of the main engine shaft.Unplug the stator and remove the set screws holding it in place.Reverse procedure to install new stator.

SOURCE: what is the spark plug

Hello Peter, shop manual shows .038 to .043

... If you buy the plugs from Harley, they will be pre-gapped at .040 ---As a rule ALWAYS double check the gap, just in case they were altered during shipping. It only takes a minute & it could save you from having to remove them.

I hope this helps.

Changing stator on 2009 xl1200

In order to change the stator you need to drain the primary fluid , remove the cover. And remove the primary chain, clutch and compensator assembly. Then you need to remove the rotor. Behind that is the stator.

How do i change the altenator

The alternator on your bike is not external. What you will probably end up changing is the rotor if the magnets are bad, or the stator, or both. The stator is the stationary piece that the magnets circle. The set up can either be a rotor centered within a stator or a rotor that looks like a flywheel with the stator under it. In either case, you will need to perform some disassembly and I would recommend you get hold of a service manual to ensure it's done correctly. I would also recommend that you troubleshoot the electrical system extensively (fuses, continuity, grounds, connectors) before assuming the alternator is bad.
