Sometimes the regulator may have to be moved into the air stream. as a semi conductor device it is important that they are not placed in a position subject to heat.

I have a 2003 honda shadow 1100c and I'm getting the right amps at the battery and the motor side and it has stoped changing but not all the time what can I do ?? What is causing the problem??


Hi, Ronnie in order to check out any main system electrical circuit, you have to start with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or better, and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
1. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
2. Check the voltage drop at the battery when you hit the starter button, anything below 9 volts you might have a faulty battery.
3. Check voltage at the battery with the bike running at 3,600 RPM should be 14.3 to 14.7 volts. If you are not getting these numbers, you might have a faulty voltage regulator.
4. Make sure voltage regulator is grounded and functioning properly, watch the video below on how to test a voltage regulator.
5. Unplug the connector to the alternator and hook your multimeter leads to the alternator (pin/socket selection does not matter) set the multimeter to AC volts, at an idle the meter should read 16 to 20 volts AC. at 2,000 RPM 32 to 40 AC volts, 3,000 RPM 48 to 60 AC volts. If you are not getting these numbers, you may have a faulty rotor, follow step 6
6. Set the multimeter to OHM'S, connect one lead to the alternator (any pin/socket) and the other to a ground, the meter should read infinity. Connect both leads to the alternator meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 OHM'S. If you are not getting these numbers, you have a bad stator.
7. Check all wiring in the charging circuit for worn or chaffed spots and all wiring connectors in the circuit for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets, which is the # 1 offender.

How do i charge the battery on a 1992 honda shadow vlx 600c


First check the battery voltage using a multi-meter set to DC and volt range if reading is below 12V battery has probably one dead cell get a new one, if between 12v and 13V battery should be OK to charge. Remove battery undo negative lead first then positive. Please do not use a car charger or any other charging device that has an output greater that 1 Amp you will fry the battery. Charge the battery for as long as possible. Recheck volts across the battery if above 13V refit battery connect positive lead first then negative.
Start your engine, when warmed up check the voltage across the battery terminals it should be well above 13 volts. Increase the revs and watch the meter the voltage should increase to about 14.5 volts. This shows the battery is being charged. Please remember batteries on bikes only last a few years and short rides do not put enough charge in your battery. Buying and using a motorcycle Smart charger does help. I use a CTEK XS 0.8 12V Motorbike Battery Smart Charger & Conditioner. You get a small wiring harness that fits to the battery with a rubber connector that connects to the chargers plug. This unit will help to keep the charge in the battery topped up.

1980 Honda CB750 not charging when hot


Hi, Anonymous before testing any electrical component in the Charging System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
1. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
2. To check the regulator unplug it from the stator. Take a test light and clip it to the negative terminal of the battery and then touch first one pin and then the other on the plug that goes to the regulator. If you get even the slightest amount of light from the test light the regulator is toast.
To do this with a meter: black lead to battery ground, red lead to each pin on the plug, start with the voltage scale higher than 12vdc and move voltage scale down in steps for each pin. Any voltage is a bad regulator.
3. On the other part of the disconnected regulator plug. Set the multimeter for Ohms x1 scale and measure for resistance across the pins of the stator. You should read something around 0.1 to 0.2 ohms for a 32 amp system.
4. Then check for continuity between each pin on the plug and frame/engine ground. The meter needle should not move (infinite resistance)(digitals will show infinite resistance) if the meter needle does move (indicating continuity)(digitals will show some resistance), recheck very carefully. If the meter still shows continuity to ground the stator is shorted (bad).
5. Set the meter to read A/C volts higher than 30 volts (the scale setting for voltage should always be higher than the highest voltage you expect or you may fry the meter). Start the bike, and measure from one pin to the other on the plug (DO NOT cross the multimeter probes! - touch them to each other). You should read roughly 16-20 vac per 1,000 rpm.
6. If the battery was good under load test, if the stator is NOT shorted to ground, and the stator is putting out A/C voltage, then the regulator is bad (most likely even if passed step 2)

Ac/heater fan slows and headlights dim intermittently on our 2003accord ex 6 cylinder


engine running or not,,??????
bad battery
or dead charging system.
rusty battery terminals.
check battery voltage parked key in pocket, see 12.65vdc.
if lower , on a warm day the battery is discharged
or at 30F it must be.12.58vdc, rested, if not the battery is discharged
or battery is bad.
if discharged , then charge it.
and fix the bad charging system.
ok you jump start car.
and the battery voltage is 13.3 to 15vdc, if not the charge system is failing, or engine RPM below 800.
if running voltage is below 13.3v the charge system is failing running.

Odyssey will not start when cold


look into your batt. Ive had issues before where it turns over fine but not enough voltage to activate the coils. As the day warms up the batt get warmer causing a little more charge. When you have this problem again try a jump box and see what happens

CHARGING SYSTEM ALTERNATOR trouble in the alternator how to check charging system problem


Hi
Use a multi meter set to 20 volt dc range. Test the batery voltage by putting red lead on pos post and black lead lead on neg post. Record voltage. Now start car . The voltage should increase 2 to 2 1/2 volts above battery voltage. Now turn on all accessories in car . Voltage should stay at battery voltage or above. If it does the charging system is ok. If not the altenator is faulty or wiring is at fault.

Unfortunately the Honda alternator is regulated by the ECU, which allows the ECU to intelligently reduce alternator engine loading to improve fuel consumption. The intelligent system uses an electrical load detector (ELD) located near the battery to control the alternator output voltage. A two wire alternator has an inbuilt regulator that will always generate the required charging voltage. When a battery is fully charged and the electrical loading is low there is no need for generating the charging voltage, in this situation the honda alternator will reduce the output voltage to reduce engine loading, hence improved fuel economy.

It starts because current flows easier in a warm battery. But any guessing about what the problem is needs to start with a charged battery, lead acid batteries need to be charged to 12.6v, if it won't charge to 12.6v, the battery needs replacing. It also sounds like your charging system may not be working right, which may have caused the battery to fail. With a charged battery check voltage at battery at 2500-3500rpm, it should read 13 to 14 volts, most bikes do not charge at idle.
