Hi Anonymous, popping on deceleration is usually caused by an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and the correct torque applied to the exhaust clamps where present. Coughing is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs of location by a wet or damp buildup of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals. Spitting is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw set to lean. Exhaust leak in 2005 dodge neon seams to be in front how can i find it and fix it

Since you wired up the muffler most likely the break is around the muffler. Easiest way to find it is to put it in park, have a helper rev the engine to say 1500-2000rpm, then from under the car move your hand around different areas and you'll feel the exhaust coming out where the leak is. Just make sure you don't touch the exhaust or you'll get burned, just place your hand near the pipes not on them!

I have a mazda tribute 2002 .and i hit a big dip and now under the engine sounds like a go looks like the exust pipe next to the oil filter has poped off

It sounds like you cracked/broke your exhaust pipe. Best thing to do is find an exhaust shop that can go in and weld the pipes back together. If you broke one of your exhaust hangers and the pipes are lower than they should be they can take care of that for you too.

It could be a broken Oil Pump, Is there oil in the engine or when you hit the pothole you could have hit the Exhaust Pipe and broke the pipe causing a Exhaust Leak.

Why does the muffler make a popping sound it ...

This is what's called an oxymoron. Because with straight pipes there is no muffler! Haha. Sorta like Jumbo Shrimp.
But the cause of your popping sound is because of afterburn in the exhaust system. With no back pressure because of the straight pipes, some of your engines' combustion is happening in the exhaust. That is a super way to burn a valve BTW.

My cadillac has started making a popping sound as I am driving. What is this a symptom of?

Dear dpeoples559,

Popping sounds coming from the exhaust can mean a few things depending on the location etc.

Does the noise happen mainly when acelerating or decellerating?

If when accelerating then it is most likely an exhaust leak which you can confirm by;
(engine running cold) covering the end of the exhaust pipe with a rag and applying a bit of pressure, if the pressure in the exhause builds up and pushes your hand away then there is no leak. If you are able to keep your hand there without trouble then you may notice air blowing from the exhaust somewhere up the pipe which will indicate a leak.

This can be solved by taking the car to your local exhaust shop to be repaired or replaced.

If there is no leak and the exhaust is popping when decelerating;
This may be 'backfire' which is a result of the petrol-air ratio in the intake of the engine to be lean or rich and can easily be fixed by a simple tuneup on the engine as well as quick scan to diagnose any problems with the o2 sensors etc. that may have caused the problem in the first place.

I hope this was the information you where after,

Reguards luke

Car died rotton egg smell

Not sure if engine coolant smells like rotten egs when it burns inside the cylinders , but it sounds like you may have blown a head gasket. Coolant and/or oil could be getting inside combustion chamber. Another possibility is that the catyletic converter might have broken up and colapsed onto the screen where it goes into the exhaust. Might give the rotten egg smell and block the exhaust enough to cause backpressure sufficient to cause the engine to run poorly too.
Try putting your palm over the exhaust pipe , if the exhaust is coming out in pulses (pop ,pop,pop) thats normal , if it is just slowly flowing out with no noticable pulses , I would check into the cat converter problem.
