Hi Anonymous, I do not know what year bike you have so, your going to have buy a special tool that will pay for itself as soon as you finish replacing your starter clutch, it's called a service manual. Good luck

SOURCE: I have replaced starter clutch

never done one to be honest but from your description it sounds like the lever bar from the solonoid to the pinion is having a problem ,what exactly iam not sure but it does sound like your starter motor was a reconditioned unit so rather than sort this out yourself which is not difficult i would return the starter under warrenty .

My 83 Honda shadow 750 vt won't start it whirls, it has a new a battery and have check gas lines. Pls help

The whirling your describing sounds like your describing a whirling starter that's not turning the motor, the starter is just spinning internally. Bad starter if so. Check the teeth on the flywheel if u pull the starter too.

I thought my starter was out but that didnt do it ... It just spins when I try to start it. 2001 yamaha v star 1100 classic. I charged my battery full charge...

Hi, Timothy your starter motor is not/was not the problem that dubious title goes to the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a separate component that is activated by the starter motor it is a mechanical gear driven part that engages the clutch pack to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. My starter spins but does not spin my engine

yes the clutch could be stuck. It sounds like it might need to be rebuilt or just buy a new one. You can take it off your self to determine what is causing the problem. If you take it off you can test it buy touching the wires to a battery to see what happins.

2003 dyna starter turns but wont engage, new battery fitted

Hi Anonymous, lift up rubber boot on positive cable to starter, unplug starter relay wire usually green, with a jumper wire connected to positive battery cable starter stud, touch blade connecter on starter where starter relay wire was removed. If starter engages and turns over engine then your starter relay is bad. If starter activates but does not engage then your starter drive/clutch is bad. Good luck

Starter clutch not turning engine.

If the battery & starter motor are good & the starter spins rapidly then the starter clutch will need parts or complete replacement
If the starter spins rapidly only with no load (removed) then either the crank / pistons are seized or the clutch

My 92 saab 9000 wont start. it makes a spinning sound sort of like a hairdryer. the battery is fine and i get the oil changed every 3000 miles and all the other fluids regularly checked. so what could it...

Either the timing belt/chain/gears has failed, which can really change the sound of cranking, but the engine visibly goes around.

If the engine does not turn (as it sounds is the case with your car), but the starter spins fast enough to be described as sounding like a hairdryer, then the starter drive is bad and the starter will need to be replaced or rebuilt.

The starter drive is turned by the starter motor, and the drive in turn turns the gear that engages the flywheel of the engine. The part that turns that gear will not let the starter motor be pushed by the engine — it has a one-way, overrunning clutch in it. If the engine got a chance to spin the starter, the starer would simply explode. It is maybe 10 or 15 to one between the engine. One good start using the gas pedal would spin the starter like 15 to 25 thousand RPM...

If that overrunning clutch fails the starter motor cannot spin the gear that turns the engine.
