Unfortunately, you can NOT change the timing with a electronic ignition. The only way to adjust the timing is to either have your "ECM" reprogrammed, or change your "POWER COMMANDER" Here is a link that should help you.

The electronic ignition will not affect the plugs or the gap setting. Use the original recommended plugs and gap.

"1991 kawaskai zx 500 set timing

Timing is mostly fixed on electronic ignitions.
You can check with a timing light under the
right side cover. There will be"T" and "F" marks.
"F" is for ignition timing. The "T" is for valve
timing which is more complex and requires a
shop manual. As you speed up the engine the
timing mark "F" will move to full advance
controlled by the timing advance unit on the end
of the crankshaft by the timing marks. It should
not be seized either.

How do i set the timing on a 1991 yamaha yz 80

I am not 100% but I think its non-adjustable. Its most likely a CDI type ignition with its own electronics. What you have to do with many is find someone that makes ignition advance rotors. Factory (or Factory Pro) is one I knew of that made ignition advancers.

It sounds like you may have a problem with your electronic ignition system or the crank position sensor. Here's a way to find out which it is. Stop by an electronic supply shop like Radio Shack or somewhere like that. Purchase a small can of "Component Cooler" and put it in your saddlebag or tool kit bag. The next time your bike suddenly quits on you, check for spark. If you have none, shoot a bit of the "component cooler" on the electronic ignition box and try to start the bike. Try this two or three times. If that doesn't help, try the same thing with the cam position sensor. If it does no good, then your problem is not temperature related.

Good Luck

I NEED TO TIME MY MOTO GUZZI LEMANS 2 AND NEED TO KNOW WHICH IS THE BEST ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEM TO BUY AND TO FIT HAVE OLD 1985 LUCAS RITA IGNITION BUT ITS OLD AND MAY NOT BE RELIABLE

Try a Dyna ignition out of the States. Well made, reliable, easy to fit and should be supported should any problems arise (unlikely). A good habit is to keep a set of points ,set up on the backing plate, under the seat of any Moto Guzzi.

Is there any way to check the timing on my 85 Honda NV400 custom without taking the heads off?

for valve timing you should only need to take rocker covers off, the same as checking valve clearances.

a timing light will check ignition timing through the timing plug on the crankcase.

Why do you think the timing could be out??
valve timing is not adjustable once initially set up.
ignition is electronic so it doesnt change, like a points ignition can

How is timing adjusted

The ignition timing on your bike is adjusted by removing the timing plug on the right side of the engine and shining a "timing light" into the hole. You should see the 'front cylinder advanced timing mark" when you have the light's trigger wire connected to the front cylinder and the engine at about 2000-2500 RPM. If it's not there, you move the timing sensor behind the timer cover on the right engine cover either clockwise or counterclockwise to advance or retardt he timing. Once set, the timing does not change like it used to when contact points was the ignition system trigger. Today's electronic ignition systems don't change once set.
