SOURCE: what would cause a 1500 Vulcan to backfire

do you mean =out of the carb or out of the exhaust,,well carb backfiring is a very weak mixture and its still burning when the inlet valve opens ,and exhaust is that there is a air leak at an exhaust joint and the heat of the exhaust with the air leak ignites unburnt fuel

Did I you change the pipes or hi flow air filter?? If so you are running lean and need to rejet or at least adjust air screw on carb.

This is often caused by an air leak , inlet manifolds, exhaust gaskets into the head or the gaskets between the headers and muffler.
This is assuming all the rest of the bike is set correctly, valve clearances, airfilter, clean carbs

Sounds like fuel is still entering one cylinder after releasing the throttle. Time to have your carbs cleaned as well as synchronized. Good Luck!!!
