Electric start means a different engine. Yes, there is a proper way to start the engine. Four controls are on your bike to assist in starting.

  • The choke, used when the engine is cold. Pull the red knob for choke.
  • The " Hot Start " Lever, used when the engine is hot. Pull the lever to lean the fuel mix when the engine has been running.
  • The de-compression lever, always used.
  • The throttle, used to prime the cylinder.
Don't kick, instead, push the kick lever downward. You will feel the back pressure as the piston is going upward on the compression stroke to the point the pressure is great enough that the kick lever "locks up". You are very close to TDC. Now pull in the de-compression lever. Push the kick lever a little bit more to get the piston past TDC. Now release the de-compression lever. Give the throttle a 1/4 turn then let it snap closed. A diaphragm in the carb gives a shot of gas when this is done. DO NOT do this multiple times because you will flood the engine. Leave the throttle closed when kicking. Now give a strong kick through the full sweep of the kick start lever. Quickly get your foot off the kick lever at the end of the kick to avoid any chance of "kickback" from the kick lever. This happens in the case of a misfire, aka > backfire. It can be very painful, and can even break a leg. I am serious about that. Repeat the process (but without the throttle priming), until the bike starts. A good battery, a clean spark plug, a clean carb and clean air filter will also aid in starting.

My xr250 (1997) has an intermitant electric fault where i loose all indictaors and lights i'm thinking it could be the stator what else could it be?

If you don't have a battery the lights will go off when the engine stops. If you have removed the battery you will kill the electrical system ( Very Expensive)

How do i remove the flywheel from my honda xr250 1987? it has an oil leak, i need to get at the seal behind the flywheel. thanks

take a long crowbar fit it between the bolts and crack the bolts with a breaker bar in an opposing or star pattern use a mapp gas or propane torch VERY CARFULY hit the area around the bold for 4 seconds to overcome any loctite if you cant break with a bar by hand first there is a better way but it involves a specialty tool or two

1984 Honda XR250 with wrong clutch, I think.

The kick shaft gear, idler gear, and clutch drum gear on the 1985 xr250 and below are smaller tooth gears than 1986 and newer. I have an 85 and an 88. I had to replace the 85 kick gears 3 times. The last time I replaced them I found that the larger gears on the 88 fit as long as you replace only the gears. The kick gear comes off the shaft and the larger tooth gear fits on the shaft. The larger idler gear fits where the smaller tooth idler was and the drum gear comes out and the larger tooth gear will fit there. Or the drum you have with the larger gear will now fit the other gears. This is a better solution than finding another drum with the smaller tooth gear because the smaller tooth gears will not last. I hope this helps.

Y wont my brand new xr250 2005 model go faster than 90kms

It is possible that your bike has been governed from the factory to only reach a certain maximum RPM, they do this so you don't inadvertently over rev the engine and blow it up.

If the bike is not governed you might have to re jet the carb, altitude and other factors can change your fuel/air requirements and cause improper operation of your fuel system therefore the maximum RPM.

Can't kick start but witnessed others do it!!

Check your spark plug. If it's black (rich mixture), replace it. (There may be carb/ignition/air intake issues causing the rich mixture.) But it's probably your starting technique. I suggest getting an owner's manual or contacting a dealer who can instruct you in the proper starting procedure.
