NO real way to gut the muffler. Best option is to buy some straight pipes.

A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

Precat on nissan altima is giving me a code p0420 and want to add a header

code p 0420 refers to cat converter system bank 1---efficiency below threshold ( cat converter cracked internally and not lighting up)=== causes ---cat converter---wiring -- heated oxygen sensor (HO2S ) 2
unless a cat converter has failed and is blocking the exhaust system they do not increase/ decrease back pressure
they do not put stuff back in the motor to damage the engine as the exhaust gas flow blows the bits out the exhaust pipe
gutting the cat converter is a waste of money as it is needed for the ECM to set the correct air/fuel mixture for optimum economy and performance
It works like this, the ECM sets a mixture that is burnt in the combustion process--the first sensor ( heated oxygen sensor reads the exhaust gas emissions and reports to the ECM which then adjusts the mixture to preset parameters or fuel trim The cat converter burns the emissions and the final oxygen sensor (O2) reads the end result and reports to the ECM as a final fuel trim
the cat converter is placed as close to the engine as possible so that they get hot enough to burn ( and they do burn at a very high temperature) so putting one further back in the system would be a total waste of money as it would eventually carbon up and restrict gas flow
so this is how it stands
1-- failing cats do not damage engines-- but will affect the back pressure by blocking the exhaust pipe
2--- cats are essential part of the economy/power process
3--- the car is designed for maximum power and performance with the cat in the right place ( not further along the system
4-- a cars exhaust system is designed and tested by qualified engineers in controlled conditions to get optimum back pressure requirements for the fuel trim set in the ECM
5 ---listening to "mates" about modifying the system will cause you problems with vehicle inspectors and that will be a cost on your wasted money
7-- here is a tip about back pressure
back pressure is used to get the low pressure area caused by the expulsion of the hot gas out of the end of the pipe to return to the exhaust valve so that when the valve opens there is a vacuum that sucks the burnt gas out of the cylinder and sucks more fuel mixture in --- read books on exhaust pipe and header tuning and you will get the message

How do I replace the ERG valve?

it is better to gut out the valve and reinstall it but it should come out with the first exhaust pipe.

Backfire exhaust

Hi Anonymous, flames are a prime indicator of retarded timing which means you probably have an electrical component going south. But which one is the million dollar question. Not quite sure about the carb cleaner in the fuel tank, like what effect does carb cleaner have on sensors? my gut says not good but I could be wrong. That being said you need to do some on board diagnostics. go to http://www.fuelmotousa.com/harleycodes.html and they will walk you through it. Good luck

HOW TO GUT FACTORY AIR BOX AND JET

Neither Jeff, I believe you will extract more top end from the scoot by removing the belt pulley restrictor and I also believe that the exhaust pipe is restricted at thesilencerend

Hey the rear of my car is siting low,can i add air?

the airbag suspension system is busted, air is to be added by the compressor everytime you start the car or a person sits in it. the compressor, check valves, seals, and all the other parts of this system can and do go bad, one right after the other. the only real fix is to gut that system and replace with standard shocks and springs. check out the parts cost on strutmasters.com and think about the labor, then think about the price of a replacement vehilce a few years newer. never have another air suspension system car, even if it is a BMW that someone gives you.

The BAFFLE fell off of Honda CRF 230 - replaceable? New exhaust?

I would say no. Is it just a slip on? Or was it clamped,? welded? How did it fall off? Even if the guts came flying out the end, they can be put back in. My exhaust system is just pressed together, I can pull it apart and rewrap the fiberglass and won't hurt a thing. Some exhausts are held together by a spring. Check it out. Hope this helps.

Random exhaust string-like mesh??

Your catalytic converters guts have broken apart and are exiting the pipes. It's like a honeycomb lattice structure. Replace catalytic converter.
