Question about 2003 Yamaha WR 250 F

The 2003 WR250F keeps dying.

It dies when you pull in the clutch sometimes. It dies when you change down a gear the bike won't start for a few minutes after each time it dies It dies at random times when riding, then clicks back in and takes off with no warning Backfires (probably a seperate problem)

ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher on hand when working on carburetors.
Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the bottom of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw on the outside throat of the
carb and the air screw on the back left of the carb bore as seen from the filter. Spray into the screw holes as well.

Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

The carb has a diaphragm fuel primer pump Each time the throttle is cracked open the pump give a shot of gas. This is fine for take off but downshifting can create a rich mix. A rich mix promotes backfire. Just don't crack the throttle.

Hi, Dan the ignition circuit cut-off system comprising of the side stand switch, clutch switch and neutral switch has the following functions:
a. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is up, but the clutch lever is not pulled.
b. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the clutch lever is pulled, but the side stand is still down.
c. It cuts the running engine when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is moved down.
Periodically check the operation of the ignition circuit cut-off system according to the following tests.
With the engine turned off:
1. Move the side stand down.
2. Make sure that the engine stop switch is set to "RUN"
3. Turn the key to "ON".
4. Shift the transmission into the neutral position.
5. Push the start switch if the engine does not start the neutral switch may be faulty.
With the engine still running:
6. Move the side stand up.
7. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
8. Shift the transmission into gear.
9. Move the side stand down if the engine does not stall you may have a faulty side stand switch.
After the engine has stalled:
10. Move the side stand up.
11. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
12. Push the start switch if the engine does not start you may have a faulty clutch switch.
This check is most reliable if performed with a warmed-up engine.

Yz 426 while riding it i went to park it thought it was out of gear and let out on the clutch and it died went to start it back up and the kick start seemed to b stuck so i rocked it back and forth fi


How does the compression feel now that you have it cranking over again. Without the decompression lever pulled in it should be next to impossible to kick it over. also, is there any noise coming from the engine (knocking, etc.) when you got it to start again.

Hi, Anonymous #7 is jumping up and down waving a red flag and the usual suspects are:
1. Faulty wiring to any safety switch.
2. Safety switches loose at the mounting point.
3. Faulty kickstand safety switch.
4. Failed kickstand safety switch circuit diode.
5. Stretched side stand spring.
6. Side stand not coming up far enough to disengage switch.
7. Faulty clutch lever safety switch.
8. Faulty neutral safety switch.
9. Clutch not properly adjusted.
10. Clutch plates sticking, forward lurch

The Clutch on some bikes will disengage the starter motor. Yamaha will not allow you to engage gear when the side stand is down. Hope this gives you some idea

I have a nid 70s enduro 100 it runs great but whaen i put it in gear it jumps a bit then dies it starts in gear as long as the clutch is not engaged im a bit lost ps i do know how to ride so its...


It sounds like your clutches are stuck.If the bike has been sitting for awhile the clutch plates will stick together. Sometimes they will unstick.1st I would change the oil. Then i would place the front tire up against a solid wall start the bike pull in clutch put in gear ,repeat a few times.If this does not unstick the clutch you might have to replace your fiber clutch plates.Hope these helps

The bike starts only when place in nutural, and sometimes in gear when the clutch is pulled in. Many times it starts I pull the clutch in to put in 1 or 2 it does not matter it dies when I place it in...


The clutch is not releasing sufficiently, it seems.

Alternately, some bikes will not run in gear if the kick stand is down. If the switch for that is not pushed sufficiently when the stand is up, you can have this problem.

Have to hold clutch to keep bike from dieing


clutch plate adjusment or cable adjustment, it sounds like the clutch is staying engaged, try loosening the cable on the clutch until there is lots of slack init and try to start the bike, if it jerks forward then you are going to have to adjust/replace the internal clutch plates hope this helps

Place in gear and bike dies


If your kickstand is down it will die on you.
