I am missing the ignition key for my 2004 Freelander If I purchase a new ignition and key (i found one on Ebay) will it work on my vehicle without needing to be reprogrammed or will I have to reprogram it regardless is there a way to by pass the anti theft device the key I have is missing the chip and will not start the motor it turns on the instrument panel and fuel pump but will not start the engine I am desperate this car was purchased for me at auction and is not in my name so acquiring a replacement key from the dealer wont be possible
SOURCE: Fuel Filter in Freelander (replacing)
The fuel filter is located below the electrics box, half way between the battery and the bulkhead on the passenger side, under the bonnet. It is very difficult to see how it all fits, but it has a central screw which holds the plastic filter housing/mounting in place. Find this screw (which is a small self tapper) and be prepared to loose it, or use a magnetic screw driver. Then lift the plastic housing up and away, (towards the engine) be ready with loads of rags to catch the diesel fuel when you disconnect the pipes. There is an earth wire attached to the housing also. (anti interference, I think) It is quite a fiddle getting it back again, as it has two locating lugs on the back of the plastic housing/mounting.

Does the starting solenoid engages? This is would sound like a deep clunk on your starter. When the solenoid engages it close the contact that energize the starter motor, but a worn contact on the solenoid would result in it engaging but not having enough current to turn the engine resulting in a clunking noise when you try to start.
The starter solenoid gets its 12 volt from a relay. This is referred to as the starter relay. If you try to crank, and you hear only a click but the starter do not turn, then the contacts on the relay maybe worn.
To sum it up, if you hear a loud clunk when it dont crank, its the starter solenoid. If you hear just a click but no crank, it could be the starter relay.

It sounds like this could be an immobilizer problem, if the red alarm LED is permanently on when you have the ignition is on this is defiantly the problem. You will need to get the key/fob reprogrammed to overcome this.
