Take the seat off (2 allen bolts at rear of the seat), then there is a nut & bolt at the base of the tank.
The tank can be lifted slightly for your needs, or if you want to take the tank fully off the tank slides back towards the seat area & then you need to disconect the hoses.

Romoving fuel tank from hd 1200x

To remove a 2011 XL fuel tank FIRST purge the fuel supply line of high pressure gasoline by removing the left side cover, removing the fuel pump connector from the ECM caddy cover (2), unplugging the fuel pump connector, starting the engine and allowing it to run until it quits and then operating the starter for another 3 seconds, turning the ignition switch to OFF, releasing/disconnecting the fuel tank quick-connect fitting, removing the main fuse, removing the seat and draining the fuel tank, (If inserting a tube into the fuel tank to remove fuel do so only on the right side to avoid damage to the fuel pump assembly on the left side of the tank interior.)THEN remove the vent hose, cable clip securing the fuel pump wiring harness, unplug the unplug the fuel pump connector, remove the bolt thread protective caps, lock nuts, screws and washers from the front and rear of the fuel tank, put a clean soft cloth or towel over the front of the fuel tank protect it from damaging contact with the top fork clamp, lift the rear of the fuel tank up, remove the fuel pump harness from the clip on the frame backbone tube and remove the fuel tank from the bike to a workbench area. Where the fuel pump assembly can be removed if necessary and where the tank can be cleaned if necessary.

To install a 2011 XL fuel tank FIRST install the fuel pump into the fuel tank with a new gasket, THEN place the fuel tank onto the bike over the frame backbone tube ensuring that the front fuel tank brackets go on outboard of the ignition coil bracket, put the washer on the long bolt and insert if from the left side into the front fuel tank bracket, the ignition coil bracket, the frame and the right side fuel tank bracket, put the second washer over the bolt threaded end and start the locknut. THEN put a clean soft cloth or towel over the front of the fuel tank to protect it from damaging contact with the top fork clamp, lift up the rear end of the fuel tank and put the fuel pump wiring harness into its clip on the frame backbone tube ensuring that the harness forms a loop between the clip and the fuel pump module to keep from pinching the harness between the fuel tank and the frame backbone, route the fuel pump wiring harness down along the left side of the H-bracket, secure it with a cable clip, push the clip into its hole in the H-bracket mounting boss, lower the rear of the fuel tank into place, put the washer on the short boltandfrom the right side push it into place through the rear fuel tank bracket and frame, put the second washer over the threaded end of the bolt, and start the locknut onto the bolt threads. And then tighten both the front and rear fuel tank mounting nuts and bolts to 15-20 ft-lbs (20.4-27.1 Nm), install the protective caps over the bolt threaded ends, install the vent hose, connect the fuel tank quick connect fitting and ensure that it is locked into place, fill the tank with fuel, carefully inspect for leaks , install the main fuse, turn the ignition switch ON and verify fuel pump operation, again inspect for fuel leaks, turn the ignition switch OFF, close the side cover and install the seat.

I need to know how to remove a gas tank on a 2003 Victory Vegas

Make sure to drain gasoline from the tank first.
Remove the side covers and the seat.
Remove the rubber covers from the front tank mount at front of tank (right side).
Remove the two screws at the front of the tank and the rear screw located in the "V" of the rear of the tank. Use care not to drop the bolts or retaining washers.
Disconnect the vent and water drain hose at the rear of the tank on the left side.
Position the front wheel straight ahead to gain adequate clearance between the tank and the triple clamp.
Lift the rear of the tank 2-3 inches above the frame and support
Disconnect the fuel level sensor/fuel pump wiring harness.
CAUTION: Remove the cap from the bleed valve on the fuel rail (under the tank on the right side). Wrap a clean rag around the fitting and depress the center of the bleed valve to relieve pressure on the fuel line.
Caution: Protect the tank from damage with a soft cloth or pad when installing tank mounting bolts.
Loosen the clamp and remove the fuel line from the fuel rail fitting. A small amount of fuel will drain from the fuel line, Catch it with an appropriate container or shop rag.
Remove the fuel tank. Place in a safe place unless you're replacing it.

Reverse the process to reinstall it.

1 Answer

Where is the fuel pump located ? Is it in the tank?

The fuel pump assembly is located in the fuel tank. Refer to the fuel tank assembly illustrations in this section. On most applications, the fuel tank must be lowered to remove the fuel pump assembly. The fuel pump assembly is cooled by the fuel in the tank.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figure 1
  1. Before disconnecting the fuel lines or any of the fuel system components, release the fuel system pressure as described previously in this section. Releasing system pressure is a very important step for the correct removal of the electric fuel pump.
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Unfasten the fuel pump assembly electrical connector and remove the fuel tank inspection cover.

If the truck has no fuel tank inspection cover, the fuel tank must be lowered or removed to gain access to the in-tank fuel pump.
    1. Disconnect the fuel outlet and return hoses. Remove the fuel tank assembly, if necessary.
    2. Remove the ring retaining bolts and the O-ring, then lift the fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank. Plug the opening with a clean rag to prevent dirt from entering the system.

When removing or installing the fuel pump assembly, be careful not to damage or deform it. Always install a new O-ring.
    To install:
    1. Install the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank with a new O-ring. Install the ring retaining bolts. Install the fuel tank if removed.
    2. Reconnect the fuel lines and fasten the electrical connection.
    3. Connect the battery cable, then start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

The "Check Engine Light'' may stay on after installation is completed. If so, the trouble code in the control unit's memory must be erased. To erase the code, disconnect the battery cable for 10 seconds, then reconnect it a verify that the light is extinguished.

How to change the fuel pump

It is inside the fuel tank.

The fuel tank must be dropped to access.

  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. If not done already, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  4. Safely drain, then remove the fuel tank assembly.
  5. Remove the fuel tank sending unit and pump assembly by turning the fuel pump cam lock ring counterclockwise, then lift the assembly out of the tank.
  6. Remove the fuel pump from the level sensor unit as follows:
    1. Pull the pump up into the attaching hose or pulsator while pulling outward away from the bottom support.
    2. Take care to prevent damage to the rubber insulator and strainer during removal.
    3. When the pump assembly is clear of the bottom support, pull the pump out of the rubber connector for removal.

To install:
  1. Replace any attaching hoses or rubber sound insulator that show signs of deterioration.
  2. Push the fuel pump into the attaching hoses and install the pump/sensor assembly into the tank. Always use a new O-ring seal.
  3. Be careful not to fold over or twist the strainer when installing the sensor unit. Also, make sure the strainer does not block full travel of the float arm.
  4. Position the cam lock and turn clockwise to lock.
  5. Install the fuel tank.
  6. Fill the tank with gas and check for fuel leaks.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
The fuel pump is not serviced separately. The sending unit must be serviced as a complete unit.
  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. If not already done, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain, then remove the fuel tank.

Be careful when removing the modular fuel sender/pump because it may spring up from its position.
  1. Remove the modular fuel sender/pump as follows:
    1. While holding the modular fuel sender assembly down, remove the snapring from the designated slots located on the retainer.
    2. Keep in mind that the reservoir bucket is full of fuel. It must be tipped slightly during removal to avoid damage to the float. Place the reservoir fuel into an approved container.
    3. Remove and discard the fuel sender O-ring.

  2. Remove the external fuel strainer.
  3. Remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) from the electrical connector, then detach the fuel pump electrical connector.
  4. Gently release the tabs on the sides of the fuel sender-to-cover assembly. Begin by starting at the sides of the reservoir and releasing the tab opposite the fuel level sensor. Move clockwise to release the second and third tab using the same method. Refer to the accompanying figure.
  5. Lift the cover assembly out far enough to detach the fuel pump electrical connection.
  6. Rotate the fuel pump baffle counterclockwise, then remove the baffle and pump assembly from their retainer. Refer to the accompanying figure.
  7. Slide the fuel pump outlet out of the slot, then remove the seal/dampener.

To install:
  1. Install the fuel pump seal/dampener, then slide the fuel pump outlet in the slots of the reservoir cover.
  2. Position the fuel pump and baffle assembly onto the reservoir retainer, then rotate clockwise until seated.
  3. Lower the retainer assembly partially into the reservoir. Line up all three sleeve tabs. Press the retainer onto the reservoir making sure all three tabs are firmly seated.

Gently pull on the fuel pump reservoir to be sure it is securely fastened. If it's not secure, the entire fuel sender must be replaced.
  1. Attach the fuel pump electrical connector.
  2. Attach the CPA to the fuel sender cover.
  3. Install a new external fuel strainer.
  4. Install the modular fuel sender as follows:
    1. Position a new sender-to-tank O-ring. Align the tab on the front of the sender with the slot on the front of the retainer snapring.
    2. Slowly apply pressure to the top of the spring loaded sender until it aligns flush with the retainer on the tank.
    3. Insert the snapring into its designated slots, making sure it is fully seated.

  5. Install the fuel tank.
  6. Carefully lower the vehicle, then fill the fuel tank.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. To check for leaks perform the following:
    1. Turn the ignition to the ON position for two seconds.
    2. Next turn it to the OFF position for ten seconds.
    3. Turn again to the ON position and check for fuel leaks.
