Question about 1983 Yamaha XZ 550

Oil coming out of the air filter

Bike was stored for almost 2 years, I primed the cylinders with gasoline to get started, took for a ride and noticed an oil leak fairly heavy, when I stopped I noticed that the oil was coming out of the air filter.

2001 vl 1500 intruder lc started smoking around the engine and drips a little oil


gday there kenneth this sounds like the seller before was trying to stop the engine from smoking ,this is a old trick you do not put much oil in to the motor so the compression when it pushes past the worn rings pressurerises the engine cases and pushes oil out of the breather hole into the airbox this is why when you filled it and put the hose back to the air filter it was smoking .best thing to do is check your spark plugs and see if there oiled up if they are see if you have a mate with a engine compression gauge and check the compression this will more than likely be it .if not take it too your dealer and let him do the test for you .hope this helps cheers

I recently changed the oil on my 2005 Honda Shadow 750 Aero, the next day riding home from work my bike died as if it was not getting gas. It immediately fired back up and I began to ride home, it happened...


If you have a fuel pump, that could be the problem. If the pump is not working, only 1 cylinder will get some fuel. Maybe water came into electrical part of the pump and shot the fuse, just check the pump operation.

Why does my dirt bike keep fouling plugs


Hi, Joey assuming it's a 2 stroke the usual suspects are:
1. The first thing to do if your spark plug has been fouled is to check the air filter. If it's really dirty, that makes it difficult for air to get through to the engine, causing a rich condition. Either clean it thoroughly with some Air Filter Cleaner or buy a new filter. Before you put it back in the air-box, treat with a fine mist of some air filter oil or spray. "WARNING" adding too much oil can also clog up the filter, resulting in another fouled plug.
2. While the gas/oil ratio doesn't equate to what the jetting is, you can still foul plugs, or worse, if the mixture is wrong. Depending on your bike, it's best to look at your owner's manual for the correct ratio. For most 2-stroke motocross bikes, a ratio is 32:1 or 40:1, the gas being 32 or 40, and oil being 1. For those that don't it, it means that for every 128 ounces (one gallon) of gas, you add 4 ounces of 2-stroke oil for a 32:1 ration, or just over 3 ounces for a 40:1 ratio.
If you have too much oil in the mixture (such as 12:1), then you will probably end up fouling the plug because it is more difficult to burn that much oil. Don't try to cut corners with the oil though, because it's very important for your dirt bike's engine. 2-stokes need the oil for lubrication on the cylinder walls, so if you don't have enough (or any for that matter) then the cylinder walls will run dry, causing it to overheat and seize the engine very quickly. So it's very important that you put in the right mixture pre-mix to your 2-stroke gas tank.
Also, 2-strokes have reeds that air and fuel go through into the cylinder, so if they are cracked or broken the bike will not run right. This could cause the plug to foul, so before you go out and buy anything expensive, make sure the reeds are in good condition.
3. While this usually isn't the main problem, it could be that your spark plug isn't burning hot enough. Having a hotter spark will ignite the fuel stronger, leaving less residual gas/oil in the cylinder that could cause the plug to foul. This "ISN'T" the best choice, but I'd say it's safe to go one plug hotter than stock. Keep an eye on the plug color you're looking for a light tan color anything whiter and you could burn a hole in your piston. Spark plug manufacturers aren't always the same, so make sure you find out how they rate them.
4. Almost every motocross bike comes rich from the factory (especially Honda 2-Strokes when they were being made). It's usually a pretty simple fix, but many riders are too lazy and would rather continue buying plugs instead of spending a few bucks on jets.
5. Piston rings badly worn or broken.
6. Faulty ignition coil low output.

Bike has problem starting think its fuel


Basic riding procedures can be overlooked even with experience riders. Adv to check petcock , should be on ON position, not on reserve or closed. Check Fuel pump (check fuse /relay location on manual replace as needed) ? hopefully you don't need a fuel pump , Fuel Filter ( replace ) .
If bike was not running for a period of time, decomposing gasoline can cause injection to gum up preventing gasoline to flow properly and thus no gas no combustion.



Adding high grade gasoline along with injector cleaner may due the trick.In addition heads may loose compression if bike was sitting for a long period of time. Make sure no debris is blocking air intake or heads vents( refer to manual)check oil level and then ride the bike until head fully compress ( about 2-5 miles) .
If problem persist provide more information along with any changes you have done to bike and more details about issue.

If I understand "the petcock was in prime position and it eventually quit dripping."
Prime = on
Sound like the needle rubber was hard and after a while they soften up enough to cut off the fuel.
Keep an eye on it and ride safe.

I started my bike up yesterday morning to go to work. I had the choke pulled about 3/4 of the way out to start and the bike had been running for about a minute. Suddenly, it just died and would not...


try to stay clear of dealers--getta book on your model and start renching -youll sleep good--u may hav flooded bike with too much choke and ended up fouling a plug from rich condition--if thats blac oil in filter the crankcase may be overfilled-that can cause fouling too

I have fuel in crank case in 1996 road king .took off cam cap and oil and gas came out. gasket was leaking. also gas and oil coming out of carbruator.


Usually when you find gasoline in your crankcase it's because your carburator is leaking fuel into the cylinder heads. From there it goes into the cylinders on top of the pistons. Down past the rings into the crankcase. If enough gasoline goes in there, it will go past the sprocket shaft seal and into the primary case as well.

This is normally caused by a bit of trash getting under the float valve in the carburator. But, on a 1996 model, there is supposed to be a vacuum operated petcock. The petcock is supposed to close whenever there is no vacuum on it that is supplied from the intake manifold. Either the petcock has been changed, which is not unusual since the petcocks were quite troublesome, or it is not working properly.

First, you need to clean out the carb. and get any trash out from under the float valve. Remove the carb from the engine. Take the float bowl off the bottom of the carb. Pull the pin out that holds the floats and remove them and the float needle valve. Blow compressed air through the fuel inlet fitting to clean any trash out of the fuel valve seat. Inspect the needle valve for damage, replace if necessary. Reassemble and reinstall the carburator. Check for proper operation prior to starting the engine.

With the carb cleaned, you can install either an aftermarket manual petcock (Pingel) or a Harley petcock for a 1994 or prior model. These are manual petcocks. When you're not riding your bike, turn the petcock to the "OFF" position. Also, install a fuel filter in your fuel line between the tank and the carb. Get one of the good ones with the scintered metal filters in it.

Change your oil and filter. Check your primary oil as well. Change it if contaminated with gasoline. Before you reinstall your air filter, connect the fuel line to the carb and turn the gas on. Closely watch the inside of the carb throat to see if fuel starts to "bubble up" into the throat of the carb. This usually takes a few minutes so be patient. If it does, you need to replace the float valve needle with a new one and check the float setting. If it doesn't "bubble up" you're good to go. Then, don't forget to turn your petcock to the "OFF" position when you quit riding the bike.

Harley runs nice in 40-50 deg. weather only


Hey Tom, gonna try and help ya here...typical vapor lock/overheating is what your describing and i sure hear a lot of it w/harleys...are you using a very high grade synthetic oil , like castrol Syntec Actevo ? are you filling up w/ premium gasoline ?
make sure your timing is not too far advanced and don;'t let it idle too low...when you come to a stoplight stand up for a strech while letting your engine get air not blocked by your legs....all these things will help greatly......Good luck to you friend...Tim

sounds like the floats are stuck. cleaning carbs should do the trick. its a good practice to start up motorcycles and let them warm up from time to time while being stored.

CBR 250 not starting


Sound like you have a fuel problem.Turn the key without starting the bike listen for a slight buzzing noise it will come from where the end of the tank and the seat meet this is the fuel pump priming if you can not hear anything then most likely your fuel pump is not working.Your carbi may have grit in a jet a carbi cleaner can help.
