Question about 1989 kawasaki ZXR 250

My 89 250r wsa running then seemed to run on 1 cylinder now will not even run i changed both coils & plugs could this be timing problem

Try to star it with startin fluid to see if it is spark or fuel if it hits with the starting fluid u know it is fuel if nothing you need to start looking at the cdi or like u said timming but cdi is a better bet check stator as well my bet is it cdi or stator if u have no fire BUT MAKE SURE IT IS NOT FUEL FIRST

Only running on the number 1 cylinder and 4 cylinder


One coil works #1 and #3 cylinder and the other one works #2 and #4, it could be a bad coil or fouled plugs on the dead cylinders.

The firing order is 4 1 2 3 it's from left to right looking at the ignition coil

did you check the coil it may be bad. for # 1 cylinder. if you can, just replace them all. then you will know everything is ok! but change #1 coil first to find out. try putting some injector cleaner in the tank, or swapping the injector from the #1 cylinder to the #2 and see if the code follows it and let us know.

SEL V6, has engine stutter, engine codes read misfire on 4,5,6 cyl, with code p0171, bank 1 running lean, will changing fuel injectors fix this? or is it more in depth?


You can verify injectors by, ...running at idle, unplug one at a time, if the engine rpm's goes down, that injector is working. If no change, you have an issue at that cylinder, being spark, fuel or compression.
I do know that some of the fords with plastic intakes are know to have intake gaskets (plenum) that harden and leak are. I would look into that.

You got the wires right, but the coils might be off, I think the 1 and 4 and then 2 and 3 fire. Something like that. I don't know for sure. I'll send you the site. Hope this helps.

On a bike like the R1 that uses 2 coils to run 4 cylinders, most always 1 and 4 run off of the first coil, and 2 and 3 run off of the second. Both cylinders run buy the same coil fire at the same time, even though they are not both on the power stroke.

The motor will still run with the leads to the coils reversed, but runs much better when they are on correctly.

Not running on #3 cyl' on my 1982 gs550


Not likely valve timing if it will run, cams are one piece so if one is right all are right. Have you checked compression with a gauge, or just by feel? Try swapping the sparkplug wire with the #1 cylinder and see if the dead cylinder moves with the wire. Also try moving the spark plug to another cylinder and see if the dead cylinder moves with it. If the compression is indeed good, the problem will be with the spark plug/ wire, or in the carb, these are the only things that can kill a single cylinder. The coils run a pair of cylinders so a bad coil would put out 2 cylinders at the same time. Start with the spark plug, I have seen a perfectly good looking plug, that would fire whun held to the head, but would not fire in the cylinder.

The bike only runs on cylinders 1 & 4 there is no spark getting to the plugs on 2 & 3 i have changed the coil this had on effect i also noticed that the rev counter does not work as well any tips...


is there power and pulse to coil 2&3 Cyl? rev counters run of the coil pulse.Number 2&3 cylinders are likely to be fowled now so replace plugs and retry (a fowled spark plug will never fire) it will only track

Hi, I have a 1998 cbr 600f3. There are 2 coils on this bike for 4 cylinders and two wires coming in and 2 coming out(spark plug wires going out). I can only get one side of both coils to fire so the bike...


Hi and welcome to FixYa,

On the 2 ignition coils:
  • two wires coming in - black/white carries/supplies IGN + 12 to both coils and the ignition control module. Coil1 (left) is connected to the ICM by the yellow/blue wire while coil2 (right) is connected through the blue/yellow wire;
  • 2 coming out - left coil powers 1 & 4 while right coil powers 2 & 3;
  • 1 &4 will fire together; so with 2 &3.

Car only running on 2 cylinders


Sounds like a bad coil pack, see if you can borrow or puchase a used 1 to test for the problem.If the problem is corrected you can either keep the used 1 or buy new. Hope this helps.
