P0172 could be a few issues, A poor performing O2 sensor can cause a rich condition. Also an injector sticking open can cause a rich condition. I would start with a throttle body cleaning and a top engine clean (I love Sea foam) it has the least side effects, run the injector cleaning ( IT MAY SMOKE OUT THE EXHAUST LARGE CLOUDS) dont be alarmed. This is a good thing. Wait a day or so to clear the codes, because the top engine clean may very well set a code anyways.

I replaced the injectors with refurbished. I also replaced MAP sensor, o2 sensor, crank position sensor, ICM, PCM, plugs, plug wires, coils and some other things I have forgotten I am sure. Oh, fuel pump and fuel filter/regulator on this model - replaced twice. Some of the problems I was trying to solve were this - other problems happened too. Fuel pressure test today - 60 lbs - a little high while iddling - I can't get it over 2000 rpm or it dies. Decay is high from 60 to 40 then less than 8 lbs after 40 in 5 minutes. I would take it to a mechanic, but I am broke. One of the mechanics recommended here has been recommended to me by a neighbor. If I hit the lottery - that's where I'll go.

If you have very littls fuel pressure after the fuel pump gets h9t, it is very likely a fuel pump.

2015 Hyundai Sonata LF. Why 'check engine' light on with DTCs P2097 and P2196?

Fuel Air Ratio is incorrect due to failing sensors or broken exhaust. Sensor 1 bank 1 is actually the Fuel/Air Sensors not an O2 sensor. Your is reporting that the ratio is too rich so it is adding less fuel. Whilst this is good for fuel economy, it causes an overheat situation which can damage the piston or burn the valves. I had the same situation in my Lexus, but it was reporting too lean. After the fuel/air sensor was replaced, it reported too lean 100 yards down the road. I cleared that code and all was fine. The engine was burning off carbon die to the rich fuel situation. I recommend this, or a cheap scanner

Speedometer sudenly stoppped working. now works intermittently. also shows check engine light. It is showing p0171 & p0172 codes. Lean and rich. seams like they contradict each other. occasionaly the...

P0171 indicates a lean condition. The most common cause of this is a defective mass air flow sensor. Also check if any vacuum leaks.Replace MAf sensor,if cleaning the MAF does not help.
OBD II P0172 Fuel System Too Rich (Bank 1).P0172 - System Too Rich (Bank 1) Essentially this DTC means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a rich condition.
When the code says that the Fuel System is "too rich," it means that the computer has been subtracting more and more fuel, which is called Long Term Fuel Trim. Ideally, the Long Term Fuel Trim should be close to 1 to 2 percent. When a code P0172 is set, it means that the Fuel Trim is anywhere from -15 percent to as low as -30 percent compensated. When this happens, the computer knows that there is an improper condition in the control of the Fuel System.
