Question about 1985 Honda CX 500 B

1 Answer

Not getting fire to the coil.

I think it could be the magneto but I don't know where it is. I am a auto mechanic but this is my first bike. It is a 1981 CX 500. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The magneto is inside the right side case cover.. I think the lutch is on the left side.. You can tell by where the cable goes in. good luck

How do you know if the magneto is bad

If you have a spark, you don't have a "Magneto" problem, Check the air filter and the 2 stoke oil tank. And check that the spark plug is wet, if it isn't firing and the plug isn't wet, you don't have any fuel getting to the combustion chamber.

My bike was working n then it starting back firing and tripping out or flat spotting. i changed the CID box along with tank coil and spark plug.it worked for like 2days then the same problem accured . i...

Hi there,

Looks like you're ruled out the rest except for one thing. The magneto coil. It must be faulty to have caused excessive voltage running through the sparks. The back firing can be caused by poor fuel-air mixture. Set it to 2.5 turns out from full close. and lean out the mixture as necessary. Check for oil as well since low level oil can cause heat problems thus tripping the engine.

Hope this helps,
levibit

ps. Start with the magneto mounted on the bike's engine body.

Bike has no power but will still crash start bike will also only go if the lights are on when lights are off bike have poor idel and will not accelerate i was thinking maybe ignition coil

It is more likely to be either the Regulatoer/Rectifier or the Magneto coils or pick-up. Your magneto sends a series of pulses at various revs. This is changed and evened out by the Reg/Rec. First step is to check quality of all connections from magneto upwards to all relevent components. IE; ignition coil, CDI unit, Reg/Rec, battery (if applic.). If the bike normally runs with a city light or running light when ignition is on, then check all switches for crossed, pinched or broken wire connections, especially around headstem area. Ideally, a service manual with relevent ohm resistance figures and a multi-meter should lead you to the problem. CDI units, Reg/Rec, Magneto Coils and pulse coils are very expensive as are ignition coils. They will all be affected eventually if the problem is not identified and fixed. Goodluck.

No fire from coil

The magneto may be rusty and has no continuity. This is under a round plate on the underside of the engine. 2 screws. the magneto is just as it sounds . Its a magnet that spines around past an armature, this generates the electricity for the bike. The magnets must be clean . You can use double 00 steal wool or 100 grit sand paper to clean them up. Be sure to blow out any dust or pices of wool out , be for replacing the cover. I hope this will get you sparking DFD

I have no fire

Being that this bike is vintage. You prob have points if not then you have a magneto and coil on the left side you will see wires coming out of the case by where your foot would be. There should be like 6 or 8 phillips head bolts to take case off. Look and inspect and see if maybe you did not tighten the magneto by the flywheel it should be two screws. Try that if the doesnt help. try to jump across the coil from one side to the other see if it fires. If that doesnt help. You may need new cdi box. If theres points I cant help you much never dealt with them much myself sorry. Hope this helps ya.
