Electrical ( & engine ) shut down Harley

I have a 1998 Harley Ultra Classic , approx. 45000 miles, Last three years , I get an unexpected shut down of the engine & elec..
The clock resets with the wrong time , loose the dash lights ( not sure about the head lights ) during the day because of fairing . Happens at slow sppeds & one time while reving up in 2 nd. gear . I pull to side of road & turn switch off & back on , after the red light cycles it starts right up . The problem is not constant JUST once in a great while !! Have replaced the circult breaker with larger fuse ( as per Harley ) & runs fine for a long time but hits me when I least expect it. I can not trust the ride anymore . Any advice will be greatly appreciated .
What is the process for checking the trouble codes ( switching ign. switch off & on , etc. ) ???

Make sure that you have the updated wire loom installed for the ignition switch. There was an additional relay installed because of overheating. That would also cause you bike to die. Pull the fairing and check for burnt wires. but also check to make sure that there is an additional harness attached to the ignition switch, between the ignition switch and the harness going to the rear of the bike ( on the right side of the frame towards to top.

Engine light on only idle

Check your electrical system. It would seem as if your alternator isn't charging correctly. You should be getting approx 14 volts at the battery with the engine running.

2007 Harley-Davison Ultra Classic with 10K miles. check engine lamp stays on

Take it to a dealership and have them plug into Digital Technician. They can then tell you what code is causing the lite to stay on. Or you can buy a code reader from Harley for around a hundred bucks and read it yourself. I have one and it works great!

Well it depends. I don't have a schematic for the 2000 Ultra but usually Harley doesn't any small wires connected to the battery. Years ago they did having a single large gauge wire for the general wiring in the bike. But, in recent years, they have moved that wire to the same connection as the positive battery cable connects to the starter. Now, the small wires may be for aftermarket "add ons" that someone has put on the bike like a battery charging pig tail, a security system, or something else. I have no way of knowing. My suggestion would be to get a schematic or try to trace the wires and see where they go. If they are for something like an aftermarket ignition system, which normally connects up at the ignition coil for it's power source, reversing the polarity of the unit could result in damage to the unit.

What does it mean when riding an ultra classic motorcycle when it gets hot going down the road it shuts off

Sounds like a main circuit breaker problem. There was a service bulletin for a breaker upgrade.

Harley-Davidson Service Bulletin M-1151: Main Circuit Breaker Replacement~Purpose: As recently advised in ML-390, Harley-Davidson has determined that a defect exists on certain 2001-2003 FL Touring and Police model motorcycles. These motorcycles have a condition whereby the 40 amp main circuit breaker could open due to reasons other than for which it was designed, causing an unexpected interruption of all electrical power. This condition could cause a “quit while riding” situation, which could occur without warning and lead to a crash, thereby presenting a risk of death or injury to the rider.

This Harley-Davidson safety recal (code 0113) affected to the following motorcycle: Certain 2001-2003 FL Touring and Police model motorcycles, including FLHTCI, FLHTCUI, FLTRI, FLTRSEI-2, FLHPI, FLHPEI and FLHTPI, assembled/shipped from the York, Pennsylvania assembly plant between May, 2000 and September, 2003.

Had a simuliar problem, Bike would have a total shutdown a High Temps/Low Speeds/High RPMs. Everything would reset itself after appox 2 minutes. Everything would shutdown Electric and engine.
2 Harley dealers spent 75 hours diagnosing it, dealer could not reproduce it. Last repair was to replace battery cables. Seems to have fixed it. Have ridden 15oo miles since repair. Problem reacurred once last time I rode. Again complete shutdown bike restored after 2 minutes. Did not happen again the rest of the day over 200 miles

2003 Ultra Classic shuts down

Could be the regulator/rectifier unit at the front of the engine. I replaced one recently with a new ,non genuine Harley part and that was faulty too. When I replaced that the problem was fixed. Don't waste your money on cheap parts.

I,ve got a 2008 Ultra classic, and want to change the fluids. It's got 8000 miles, and i dont have a owners manual. the oil, i can figure out , but the trans, and the primary I dont have an idea.

On the bottom of your transmission, there are two drain plugs, one for the transmission and one for the engine oil. The plug in the center is the transmission drain plug and the one toward the left front is the engine oil drain. The primary drain is a small pipe plug that takes a Torx wrench located at the bottom of the primary cover towards the rear of the bike.

Engine oil three quarts with filter. Then start the bike and let it run for a few minutes. Shut down the engine and check the oil level with the dipstick. The dipstick has two marks on it. "Full Cold" and "Full Hot". Fill to the full cold mark.

Transmission takes 20-24 ounces of oil and the primary takes 38-44 ounces of oil. Do not overfill the primary as it will cause your clutch to drag. All three sections take H-D Syn3 20W50 synthetic engine oil.
