No year specified, but on older Sportsters the cable is driven off the front wheel axle. Start by removing the cable at the speedo, just loosen the retainer and pull gently down. follow the cable down to the front axle. There is the little set screw under the part of the front drive unit where the speedo cable attaches...it is very small...remove all the oil dust off the outer metal connection where the speedo cable attaches on the front axle and use a mirror and flashlight to see the screw...remove it and then start to "TURN" the cable counter clockwise and it will start to come out...do not "PULL"...you will have to turn the cable maybe 5 to 7 revolutions and then it pops out.

Hi there : My M.Lancer c61a Yr 1991, is leaking oil through the speedometer cable,, I've been having oil fall on the floor mat beneath the pedals.

Is your trans over filled if not you will need a new speedo drive assembly that goes in your trans. You also may need a new speedo cable. Don't forget to check your trans oil level.

Transmission isnt shifting when driving and the speedometer quit working

I hate having to give bad news. In this case I have no choice. This is most likely the TCM, Transmission Control Module. To be sure you need the Diagnostic equipment that transmission shops have but you or I couldn't afford as owner mechanics.

The speedometer does not register speed

If this is an electronic dash check fuses first. If it has a cable to the trans (mechanical) then check to see if the cable is connected to the trans and then the back of the speedometer. Electronic speedos have a speed sensor on the trans that goes bad and the connections at the trans can get dirty at the electrical plug.

I need to know where the speedometer cable plugs into the transmission please on a 1994 honda civic 5-speed

It goes into trans just behind engine block. If yours trans is on the drivers side than lean over fender look between engine block and firewall. If other side lean over that fender and due the same.

1989 toyota 4 runner speedometer not working. does it have cable that runs to the gauge from the transmission or is it electrical? where should I start the troubleshooting

Yes it has a Cable! Does the odometer work? If so the problem is in the Speedometer head. If not you should soon be getting a check engine light on with a code that indicates a Vehicle speed sensor problem (VSS). The you should look to a broken cable.

My speedometer bocunce off betwween 140 and beyond that at every speed. graphited head and cable .I have another speedometer but dont know how to remove needle on fox body ford

Check the gear in the trans. Also check the cable to gear in the trans. The gear is plastic and where the cable goes in the plastic cable,it can wear out the square hole.also the plastic gear on the inside(other end where the cable goes in the trans.)can wear down and slip as the gear on the trans turns. This gear is removable, and can be purchased at the dealer, not expensive.

91 Corolla - Transmission fluid drip...inside!

The gear that is on the side of the transmission has a small seal, where the speedo cable goes into the speedometer take-off unit. When the seal goes bad, the cable drags trans fluid up the inner core. I have changed this device several times for the same symptom. Replace the speedo unit on the side of the transmission.
