we need to know if it is 2 stroke or 4 stroke
then again we need to know if it is oil injected ,2 stroke as well

Matt, If engine is two stroke and not oil injected then yes you must mix 2 stroke oil and fuel. 4 stroke engine have a crank case which is filled to proper level with 4 stroke engine oil. Check the attached links,instruction and guides, Good luck

these small engines take 2 stroke oil/gas mixture, usually a 50 : 1 ratio, a little heaver on the oil is better than too light. the oil in the gas lubes the internal parts of the engine. if straight gas is introduced into gas tank just remove & replace with 2 stroke mixture. if engine has not been operated with straight gas, no harm will be done.
Lightly seat both screws then open each of them one and one half turns. This is the factory setting for Japanese bikes. Clean the air filter, install a new spark plug, I assume the Sym has a two stroke engine, mix the gas ans oil 32 to 1. That equals 4 ounces of two stroke engine oil per gallon of gas. NEVER use motor oil, only two stroke engine oil. Also, tighten all carb fittings such as mount bolts and clamps. Replace any rubber fittings if you see cracks. A cracked manifold will let air into the mixture which leans the mix and makes the idle rev upward.
Determine if your engine is a two-stroke or a four-stroke. Check the gas
tank on your lawnmower or the owner's manual to determine what type of
engine you have.
Read the label of your two-stroke oil. Follow the directions on the
package to ensure the right mix. Measure and pour the gasoline in to the empty gas can.
Add four ounces of two-stroke oil per each gallon of gas.
Replace the cap on the gas can and shake the oil and gas to mix. Add
fuel to your engine.
Is it a 2 stroke or 4 stroke? if it has a plug on the bottom above the blade to drain oil (look under the deck on the bottom of the engine) it is a 4 stroke and you do not mix gas / oil in this type of engine. It works just like your car, change the oil every 2 months and keep good gas in the tank. If the engine has no oil plug to drain oil it is a 2 stroke and you do need to mix the oil / gas. is should mix at a 1 to 32 ratio. use low ash oil.

Always ensure there is adequate ventilation when handling fuel.
