Depends on make and engine spec. also whether OHV or OHC i.e. rocker arm activated valves or cam activated valves.

2003 250 trailblazer will not start ,we have spark ,gas, and around 100 comp. i have it a atv shop now they have had it for 4 months , they have done everything from new piston and rings ,they have done...

100 psi compression is pretty low for an atv. It sounds like the shop has done everything but check the valves. A tight intake valve will cause issues starting and cause low compression when testing. I would suggest doing a cylinder leakdown test, the shop should know what I'm talking about. This will tell if it is a valve issue or cylinder issue. Most often this test is overlooked and is a very important diagnostic tool. Let me know if you need any more assistance, Daniel.

Exhaust blows and sucks when turned over on trx300 Honda Fourtrax atv. What's likely the problem? I suspect something to do with the valves, perhaps a top end rebuild or just new top end gasket and o-ring...

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly
The exhaust valve is remaining open. This can be caused by carbon stuck under the valve tapered head area, a cracked valve seat or..... a broken valve spring. NOT head gasket. Before you take the head off.. open the valve cover and check for a spring problem. If there does not appear the be a spring problem watch the valve travel and then make sure with the piston at the top of cylinder that the rocker arm has 0.003 - 0.005 clearance between the tappet and the end of the valve.
If there is no clearance adjust the tappet clearance.
After you have the proper valve clearance check for the previous symptom. If you still have that symptom then your going to hae to remove the head and inspect the valve tapered area and valve seat for carbon, cracks and abnormal wear.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

I just rebuilt the top end on my daughters 90cc baja atv put it together set the timing and it cranks up and you can ride it for a little bit and it will start spitting and spurtting and die and then it...

Sounds like the valves are not set correctly. It is likely the intake valve is set too tight. Set the clearance at 5 to 6 thousandths. The exhaust should set at 8 to 10 thousandths. Check the timing with a timing light if you already haven't done it. If the valve clearance and ignition timing look okay, recheck the cam gear timing.

hi there it only starts to back fire when the engine is hot this points to incorect valve clearances os slightly damaged valve seats this is only oticable when the engine is hot due to heat expansion the clearancea would be an easy fix but to doo valve seats the cylinder head would have to be removed which is quite a big jo although i would try the valve clearances first unfortunatly i do not have the clearances but im sure i atv shop would tell you or if you have the manufacturers service repair manual it will te you in there hope this helps ben
