The problem may be that you sucked a bunch of chemtool into the electric fuel pump in the gas tank, that stuff doesn't burn very well and would cause a rough run and black smoke. If it is now running ok with no check engine light on then i would think you are home free.

Depending on the type of service that was done; This can occur when the Computer is not reset (if the car is fitted with one). B12 chemtool is an injector cleaning tool, but remember that it will clean the Fuel Tank, try to clean the fuel filter, the fuel pump, and all of the fuel lines. This can cause the Fuel Filter to be filled up with rubbish from the Fuel Tank, Fuel lines, and the Fuel Pump. This B12 chemtool's job is to carry all of this rubbish through the system and even remove carbon from combiston chamber, and push it all down the exhaust and out of the car.

This will then cause the engine to react in strange ways, and can cause overheating and combustion pressure to bypass the piston adding excessive pressure in the crankcase, this will cause a higher than normal pressure through the PCV valve and carry engine oil through the inlet manifold.

SOURCE: engine hesitating during acceleration

Ok, there are many issues here that you will need to inspect. I recommend changing the fuel filter and pump as well. this will fix the hesitation. the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets will need to be replaced as well. this will stop the backfiring.

I also recommend checking and running a teat on the PCV valve and inspect the PCV hose as well. it could have a leak or a small crack on it.

Check the air filter and change if needed. this will help with acceleration issues as well. Next, i would run a check on all plugs and the complete wire set as well. change if needed.

Inspect the injectors for leaks and lose wires. make sure they are in good condition. replace any injectors that isn't firing properly.

Ok, there are some sensors that you will need to check as well. i will list them below.

SENSOR CHECK LIST--

1. Check the O2 sensors for worn wires.
2. Check the MAFS(Mas Air Flow Sensors) Check for Damaged, Loose, or Faulty Mass Air Flow Sensor or Circuit.
3. Check the Air Cleaner Temperature Sensor. this sensor could be damaged ro have loose wires. check accordingly.
4. Check the Throttle Position Sensor. this device could be connected wrong or it may be faulty as well. replace if needed.

Be sure and inspect all the above and repair any problem spot you ruin across during your inspection.

Please rate and god bless:)

Sounds like you got a tank of bad gas. That would easily cause your issues. Start by draining as much as you can, put a can of Seafoam in there, add a few gallons of fresh gas, drive to the gas station and tank up, and run that tank down until your gas light comes on before adding more. You may end up needing a fuel filter or plugs again, but with minimal run time on the bad gas, you'll probably be fine.

My car tugs and shuts off i changed the fuel filter

If it did this after changing the fuel filter, then there is the possibility that doing so may have dislodged any sediment in the filter canister, or other debris picked up from the environment and it got pumped into the fuel rails.

I recommend a fuel system treatment product called B12 by Chemtool. Add to about a half tank of fuel, that will be about the safest concentration for occasional use. Then, don't start the car right away. Turn your key to "run" wait a few seconds and then back off again, repeat three times. This will fill your fuel lines with the treatment. Don't start the car, let it sit for about a half hour. Then try it again.

I would do an oil change first and double check to make sure the oil is always at top level without over filling it. If the problem persists after that, then check your air filter, fuel filter and spark system.

Black smoke is usually caused by a bad oil seal, clogged air filter or fuel problem.

My Escort is sputtering at interstate speeds but stops at lower speeds. Also sputters more going up hill. Is this the a tune up issue..ie spark plugs or dirty fuel filter or should I just replace both....

Well,at 180K it's going to need some work.i would start with a tune-up (spark plugs, wires, fuel and air filters. Maybe a bottle of Techron injector cleaner in the fuel tank. See how it runs,,,,go from there. I always say,"do the easy stuff first"
