What causes a car not to crank when hot

This is a common symptom (if not the most common symptom) of a failing starter. It will crank when cold and will not crank when engine gets hot. This is a failing condition and eventually won't crank when it's cold either.
It's also possible but not nearly as likely that the timing of the motor is too far advanced. When the motor warms up, the timing advances further to a point where the motor is too difficult to crank.

What causes my04 sportster starter to drag badly when i go to restart the bike after i have driven about 5 miles

When the bike is warmed up everything is tighter so it is harder to turn it over and the starter needs to draw more amperage so if you battery is weak it will not have the ampewrqage needed but also if the starter has defective windings they may fail when hot but not when cold so you will need to do some more testing to see precisely what is the problem.

How to fix the yamaha krypton starter not engaging the engine

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Why does my radiator cooling fan quit working

I am assuming this a fan belt driven system and not an electric motor driven system like on some Fiats I have seen. Usually there is a sort of clutch involved between the belt driven pulley and the radiator fan. This is to prevent the fan from spinning (and cooling the engine) before the engine/coolant has reached certain temperature. This is designed essentially for cold climate countries. The fan should start spinning once it gets hot. If not this clutch might need replacement

GPZ 500 - starter chain spins on cogs

First may I say I don't know for sure your bike model that well (In- line 4 cylinder or water cooled twin?) BUT I am very experienced with motorcycles ( I am a qualified motorcycle mechanic & have owned GPZ 550, Z650, ZIR-II ).
For starters Kwasaki have used two different methods of delivering drive from the starter motor to the engine. Gear driven & chain driven. The chain driven type ( like GPZ 900 R ) were equiped with a tensioner. If yours has a tensioner be sure to change it with a new one also.

Both of the styles of drives ( chain & gear ) incorporate what is called a starter clutch mechanism.

This is what allows drive from the starter motor to be applied only when the starter motor is activated & free wheel when the engine runs. It is a one way clutch mechanism.

I am explaining this because a verry common fault on all electric start bikes is the starter clutch. ( except Moto-Guzzi, BMW, Harley which use a car style starter with a sliding pinion ).

When the starter clutch is faulty it displays a very distinct symptom.

When the starter motor is activated, you will hear a "whizz" followed by a crunching noise rather reminicent of a chain jumping teeth on a sprocket.

If this is the case with your bike & is what is what led you to change the chain, plus is what your continueing problem is, I would suggest you check the starter clutch.

The starter clutch comprises of a drive gear(the one that the chian, or startor motor output shaft drives), 3 rollers, three springs with guide pins, & the housing plate for the rollers & springs with guides.

To effectivly repair a starter clutch it is necessary to replace the gear, the 3 rollers, the 3 springs, sometimes the housing plate if it is also worn (from the rollers moveing)

I am hopefull this may shed some light as to the cause of your problem.

If not please post a comment & I'll try to help you further.

Rectifier Problem?? When the bike is very hot and I make a quick stop for gas, when I hit the starter button to start it up, it sounds momentarily like it's going to start then it feels as if the battery...

If the battery is charged, its charged..... redpoint5 is right, check the battery when hot... If the battery was not charging i would then look into the charging system, rectifier, etc.... Is it an air cooled engine? Sometimes engines can get a little warped when hot... My grandfather had Corvair vans as taxis that somehow always got overheated, after that they would never start hot. So, he had to leave them running all day.... If your battery is OK you may want to have a look at your starter.... Or, bypass the selenoid with a jumper cable and see if the starter kicks over fine when jumped directly...... That would indicate a bad or worn selenoid.

Starter dragging problem

You added an extra ground but did nothing with the positive cable. It's time to replace that one, possibly using better quality cable then stock.
