Question about 2008 KTM 250 SX-F
My bike lost power then died and I got it started for about 2seconds then while I was kicking it locked up and the kicker won't budge now
All the signs are that the engine has siezed, could be costly Im afraid

first you need to remove carb clean them , then new gaskets . sounds like they are glazed due to old fuel drain tank and refill with new fuel

The grinding noise could be many things none good.
Has the bike enough oil & is it being pumped round OK (does the radiator heat up?)
If there was no grinding noise on the way home it could well have been the kick-start mechanism; as the footpeg fouled the kick-start, its mechanism didn't pivot far enough round to disengage from the ratchet. So the noise you heard was the mechanism returning but still in contact with the ratchet. This is the most likely answer.
When you adjust the decompression valve it actually depresses an engine inlet valve. You may well have adjusted it too far leaving the inlet valve slightly open as it fires, giving you back-firing in the inlet tract
Please mark this as very helpful (if it has been!!)

SOURCE: went for a ride the
the flat battery shouldnt cause the problem and you said it has spark at the plug, so that sort of eliminates electrical problems.
if the carb is clean and it has good fuel, its a bit tricky to diagnose.
perhaps a sheared flywheel key,
blocked fuel line( it might have a tiny filter in the tank on the ends of the fuel tap pick up tubes)
or short in the kill switch may let it spark sometimes)

SOURCE: ktm wont start
Check the kickstand switch, mine went bad and did the very same thing, ran for a few secs then died, was the kickstand switch, removed the switch and ran normal. as for the sound, my bike does that too, was told with a big grin of the guys face, "thats normal, does that some times". Its some engine part that makes a ratcheted sound, had mine do it just yeser-day, sounds bad but nothing is wrong with your bike, if it is what I'm talking about. I think it something with the kick start mechanism. The dang thing sounds like its choowing it self up when its running, it drove me nuts for a few, but I got used to it, its just noisy and vibby, Its KTM. I herd they fixxed the vibration thing in later bikes, not sure bout that though.
