Hi Anonymous, Check gas cap for correct venting, cracked or broken vacuum line to fuel valve, fuel lines kinked or blocked, fuel valve defective, float and or needle and seat in carburator stuck, low speed jet clogged. Good luck

1964 falcon ranchero 260 v8 have to prime carb. after idle a few days to start. allso when driving and come to a stop dies

Disconnect the fuel line from the carb. Put the fuel line in a container and crank the engine for 4 or 5 seconds. You should see good squirts of fuel. Better yet put a fuel pressure gauge in line just before the carb. You should have 4-7 psi. It might be quick to get a gas jug a start a syphon to the carb. Dont forget to catch the fuel from the disconnected fuel line. If it starts right up its probably the fuel pump. If not the carb may need a good cleaning and rebuild. Check float bowl level. Check idle air screw adjustment.

Engine won't stay running - only will start with starting fluid.

VERY COMMON problem with gas engines.

I recommend starting all your gasoline using machine ever month or two. Let them run a few minutes. Same with cars/trucks.

Start you r car/truck every couple months and drive forward and backward several feet as well.

If you have a gas shutoff valve, turn it off and run engine till all gas is out of carb before storing.

Gas turns to a hard lacquer is sitting too long. remove air cleaner covers, Pour some real good (strong/thorough) carb cleaner in carb and leave sit over nite. If that doesn't work, do it another nite. If not working yet, you may have to take carb off and open it up. Be careful there are little tiny parts in there.

Why am i getting gas in crankcase?

You have a stuck float in the carb...the newer carbs a have a small valve that stops the gas from leaking to the ground when stuck..however it now goes into the intake and into the cylinder and open valves and eventual filling the engine with gas oil nix..I had this and found out don't mess with the carb..cause it will happen again..there is a quick and permanent fix..if your tractor has a gas shut it off if not apply one...first if you have gas in oil it must be takin care of now..it can and will fill the entire engine block..so here is the fix..drain the engine block change the filter then remove and ckean the plug..now tape or cover the plug..and slowly crank the engine to blow excess gas from the cylinder. Just keep the plug away..put oil, filter and plugs back..put on a gas shut off or if you already have one..keep it closed at all times when not in operation..here is the important part..when done mowing put the throttle in low and reach up and shut off the gas..let it run unti it uses up the gas left in the carb..when starting open the shut off and let open a few seconds to fill the carb..then start....you must do this eah time you shut it down and restart....or get the carb rebuilt not to say it won't happen again..your choice..good luck.

This sounds like the float is sticking in the carb causing it to flood . You need to take the carb off and clean it and put a kit in adjusting the float per the instructions

Have a murrry mower with 12 hp moter put a cut off on gas line some times runs ok then will start flooding if you cut gas line off start engin it will run a second or two then start blowing oil out an

If you have a float style carb I believe the float has become a "sinker". Pull the float bowl off the carb and set aside. pull the float pin and also set aside. carefully remove float and needle, set needle aside. Shake the float near your ear. If you hear sloshing in the float, replace it. No? check needle and seat for wear, or since you're into the carb this far replace them. This info is based on Tecumseh carbs, but B&S or Kohler should be similar. If there are any other questions don't be afraid to ask. There is no such thing as a stupid question.

I think you should put some thought into soaking the whole carb in cleaner fluid. seems the little passages for fuel are plugged and should be blown free with pressurized air after a good long soak. this happens with age, especially if the thing sits over winter or other long periods with no stablizer put in the gas before storage. gas turns into a lacquer like substance without the stabilizer.

It is very common for the jets to varnish up (even with StaBil) and carb cleaner can't get into those areas. You can take the carb off and soak it in carb cleaner.
One method that I try before I take it apart is to spray a ONE second blast of starting fluid into the carb throat. Attempt to start the engine. If everything but gas is ok, the engine will start. Do it only one more time, this time with the choke on full and usually this is enough to get the engine running.
Be careful and don't do this more than twice. Starting fluid is very dangerous to use and will ruin your engine if you use more than a one second blast more than two or three times.
Have a fire extinguisher handy if you motor backfires and the carb throws a flame.

My hedge trimmer will not start... Put in new gas

It's not getting gas, due to being gummed up with old gas. Remove all of the old gas and mix up a batch of fresh gas&oil. Also get some carb cleaner. Put just a little of the gas&oil mix plus an equal part carb cleaner. Try to start it just to work the new mixture through the carb. You might use the spray start to help pull the new gas through. If it fires up on the new gas&oil&carbcleaner mix, shut it off and let it sit for an hour or two. Drain it out and try just a little gas&oiil without the carb cleaner. If all is well fill the tank. If not, repeat the whole process. If you can't clear the gum this way you may have to remove the carb to clean it. Good luck.

Will crank and run for a second but stop then gas

Engine is flooding, need to pull the carbs and clean them. Carbs need to be taken apart, the jets removed and cleaned out. The low speed jets, the small ones, have a very small hole in them use a single bristle out of a wire brush to clean it out, do not make the holes any bigger. once you get the jets cleaned out, put em back in, reassemble the carbs, reinstall and have a good ride.
