Hi Anonymous, it's a common mistake your not alone. Engine and transmission oil live in the oil pan underneath the transmission. The engine oil drain plug is on the left side rear corner, and the transmission drain plug is on the bottom right.. Good luck
Use only a JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. Automotive oil uses different additives and will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. Shell Rotella T Synthetic (15w-40 about $22) and Shell Rotella standard oil ($12 a gallon) for diesel engines , both are JASO MA rated for motorcycles.10w-40 oil is good for cold climate. 20w-50 for hot climate/touring. Synthetic oil will make your cycle run cooler and shift easier. For the engine you will probably need four quarts of oil, a filter, an oil filter wrench for the spin on filter, and a drain plug washer. Place a pan under the cycle spin off the old filter, wet the seal on the new filter with oil and spin on the new filter following the tightening instructions on the side of the filter. Open the drain bolt on the bottom of the motor and hold the bike level to drain all the oil. Replace the drain plug with a new washer and tighten the bolt enough to compress the washer and seal in the oil. Pour in three quarts and check the oil level by placing your motorcycle on the center standard looking at looking at the dip stick. Run the motor and top up as needed. You will probably use 3.4 quarts of oil. If changing the oil filter you will have to run the motor to get an accurate oil level reading.
dont know how many miles or how well you maintain it,but its a possibility of the check valve in the camsupport plate sticking though thats more common in 88 inch motors,how well do you trust your mechanic shop,they should be able to pinpoint what happened,however if your not sure of your shop,I have two retorical questions,how long after your last service did it happen,and did you check to see that there was oil in it after it quit,they wouldnt be the first to 'forget"to put oil in it or maybe the drain plug came loose, thing is only the guy that tears it down will know for sure,but you definatly lost oil pressure, your idiot light should have been glowing
