Question about 2002 Yamaha TT-R 225

1 Answer

TTR225/230 Chirping Was developing a chirping noise after riding for a while. Was afraid there was some bearing problems so considering the cost, found an 07 230 engine and put in it. Tore the 225 apart and did not see any visual damage. After the first ride with the 230, about 8 miles in the woods, it started to chirp. The only parts off the 225 engine we used on the 230 were the starter, stator assy., rotor assy and crank case cover. Kind of odd to be doing the same thing in two different engines. Would think we could rule out oiling, cylinder, wrist pin, or ring problems. Thanks for any help. Frustrated!

Thought it might be in the starter but we pulled the starter out and grounded it against the engine and hit the starter button and it seemed to spin free and fine with no noise.

Well after thinking it was a starter clutch and checking all of that. Everything fine. We pulled the starter off while engine was running still chirping. We then pulled the oil filter out just for kicks and put the cover back on and started it. All the noise stopped. The new "Volar" oil filters that I was using was too restrictive and not letting the top end oil properly. Very expensive lesson on a cheap filter!

Finding a noise like this can drive you mad. Best thing to do is find out when the chirping starts. Does it start when you first start the bike? Does it only do it when your at 45mph? Anything like that will help find the problem. Its hard for anyone online to help but if you have more info maybe we can help.

Seems to be after riding the trails for a while. After engine has got good and hot.

last time, yesterday, it seemed to put a load on the engine and caused battery to go down trying to start. Had to pull it back to camp.

    Is the starter disengaged?

  • shawn Mar 30, 2014

If the starter is good then i would look at the clutch. Sometime the bearing will make a sound after you shift gears or when you shift.

Making a chirping noise while driving

Most chirping noises are due to bad pulleys on the motor. It's usuually an idler pulley or belt tensioner pulley. May also be the bearing in the alternator. Use a stethescope to check otherwise you can use a rubber hose. Put hose up to one ear and put other end by each pulley. Should hear high pitch chirping.

Intermittent chirping noise

I have had alot of customers with this problem. There is another pulley called the idler pulley and alot of times its bad due to the bearing wearing out. I would replace that 1st for around $20

99 Chevy Malibu belt chirping noise problem.

one or more of the pulley's is defective, most likely the tensioner pulley, but check them all for wear and side to side movement which indicates a worn bearing, this causes the belt to not run true and chirp.

Squeaky elec. dryer

This could be attributal to a rear drum roller lacking proper lubrication, or having been overheated. Also, a dry idler pulley bearing could cause this chirping. Don't allow this problem to continue without investigating the cause.
