How to adjust tappet clearance


Solid lifters and/or manually adjustable tappets? Now you are making me feel old. Well, if you have something that old, the way it is done is to use feeler gauges to check the spacing between the tappet and the push rod when the valve is fully closed and the cam lobe for that particular valve is not pushing on the rod at all. Many of those old tappets had a slot for a screwdriver so you could turn them to make the adjustment, and then lock them in place with a wrench by tightening the binding nut onto the rocker arm (tappets are mounted on the rocker arms). Obviously, all of this has to be done with the rocker arm cover(s) removed. That means that before you start, make sure you have a fresh gasket for the cover on hand. You will never get a used gasket to seal a second time.

WHY DO ROCKERS KEEP BUSTING 3.3 MOTOR


there is not enough spring travel on the valves The rockers used are incorrect for the cam used and the lift of the cam is making the rocker push the valve too far down and is binding up the spring. You may have something else wrong like extra spacers under the valve springs , valve guides not in far enough valve spring retainers not correctly positioned or wrong inner spring that is binding up. Turn the cam over carefully and see it the distance in the spring coils disappears before fully open the valve.

2002 ford mustang won't shift into 3rd gear


most 4 speed shifters from 2nd gear to third gear, go up and to the right side. The linkage may be not be lubricated and binding up with 1st and 2nd gear shifter rod.Put car up on jack stands in front, and have some one shift through the gears, and see if shift rod is binding up.It may also be bent. Put in 4th gear, and have some one down shift from 4th gear down to 3rd, and to 2nd.If not bent, keep shifting through all the gears. If rod is bent, replace. I hope the clutch is good. Dont try to bang the gears hard. Hope this helps

check the throttle cable for binding or fraying, then check the movement of the throttle shaft with the cable unhooked as they can wear and cause binding. if the cable is worn replace if the throttle shaft is binding replace assembly. check to make sure the gas pedal is not binding as well.

Shifting linkage problem


This could be simply a matter of adjustment. Rod motion is a factor but also the lateral position of the levers in the steering column. Years ago, this was accomplished by inserting a pin through holes in the shift levers to lock them in relationship to each other, then rotating the temporary assembly to find a location where shifting was easy and there was no binding. By trial and error, you should be able to find what works.

How to fit new push rod cover cups


On your bike the factory stock push rods do not adjust.

So, you'll have to remove the top of the rocker covers, remove the rocker arms, remove the push rods (keep them in order, as they are different lengths and need to go back in the same spot they came out of) remove the push rod tube clip, and collapse and remove the push rod tube assembly.

Once out, disassemble the push rod tube, then reassemble with the new push rod cup.

Reassemble everything, putting the push rods in the same spot the came out of (again, they are different lengths)

I just need the procedure and the torque specifications for installing rocker arms and push tubs on my 91 jeep cherokee 4.0


Place each push rod in the hole in the cylinder head made for it, make sure that the rod is straight and seated in the lifter, not next to it. Rocker arms are mounted on "bridges". Place a bridge assembly where it belongs and set the rockers on top of each corresponding push rod. Tighten each bolt, alternating between each so you don't pull it over to one side. Torque spec. is very low, being only 19 foot lbs. (I generally go a bit tighter, but don't go crazy with that. 25 is probably the snapping point)
You will find that certain cam lobes will be in the "up" position. You can still tighten down the bridge as long as you are careful, or you can rotate the engine by hand so the cam turns off that spot.
After you are finished, rotate the engine twice by hand and watch each rocker arm to make sure it is moving up and down as intended. If you feel any binding, stop and find out why.
Torque on the rockers is not super critical so if you don't have a wrench that goes that low, just tighten them carefully and don't pull on the wrench like you are trying to pull the crankshaft up through the head and you will be fine.

The roller rockers broke. I am not sure why but I need to know how to replace them


You didn't say what kind of car is, but but if they have a hex nut with Allen screw inside it. Remove the nut and screw the screw back. Remove their old rocker and put the new one on. Put the nut on but not too tight. Now turn the motor slowly until the other valve for that cylinder opens. Now a just and nut down. If it's a hydraulic tighten the nut down snug thing go 3/4 turn more. If its mechanical use a feeler gauge and go with the proper clearance. Then tighten the Allen screw back down very tight. Try to figure out what went wrong. Because it could happen again. Remove the push rods and roll them on a flat surface to see if they are straight don't use bent push rods. Then check for spring bind, with the valve all the way open there should be no spring bind use a feeler gauge to check for this. Also look at the rocker to make sure it's not restricted in any way, also no interference with the pushrod. Without seeing it that's about the best I can do. Good luck.

For valve train noise try these:
1. Low oil pressure caused by oil feed pump not functioning
properly or oil passages obstructed.
2. Faulty hydraulic lifter(s).
3. Bent push rod(s).
4. Incorrect push rod length.
5. Rocker arm binding on shaft.
6. Valve sticking in guide.
7. Chain tensioning spring or shoe worn.
8. Cam(s), cam gear(s) or cam bushing(s) worn.
9. Cam timing incorrect.

If it is a bottom end knock, an engine tear down may be in order.

I don't know how to change the ankle strap


You have to losssen the screws on the sides with the 04 models i believe. otherwise you push down and the pull the strap to the sideand it should pop out when you pull it back up. But I think the 04 year was screwed ninto the base.
