Best answer to this is to ask the H-D parts department where you would buy the gauge to print off a copy of the installation instructions that come with the led gauge and then look at the 96 wiring to see if it will match up. Otherwsie at first glance it seems to me that the led gauge will work on the same principle of a variable amount of amperage flowing through the sender unit to ground through the led circuitry and should work as the flow is from source to ground through the variable resistance in the fuel sender.

Is the clutch cable adjusted correctly, you may need to adjust the cable so that the clutch is released more fully, there will be an adjuster on either end of the clutch cable - adjust it so that the cable is tighter - but there should be a little bit of play left in the clutch - if this does not cure the problem you could have some gearbox damage,
The bike is still under warranty so take it to a harley dealers and have them look at it.

Fuel gauge is inoperative

Check for 12 volts at the orange wire on the fuel gauge. If missing check instrument fuse and associated wiring. If present do the following checks:

1. Remove gauge. Ground Y/W wire of fuel gauge sender located at bottom of gauge. Turn ignition switch ON.

a. Fuel gauge must indicate FULL. If gauge indicated FULL, gauge is functioning correctly and go to step 2.

b. If gauge did not indicate FULL, proceed to step 3.

2. Set MULTI-METER to resistance scale to measure the resistance of the sending unit. Place one probe on Y/W and the other probe on a good ground.

a. If fuel tank is full, the reading should be 40 ohms. An empty tank should have a 240 ohm resistance. A half full tank will be pproximately 97-118 ohms.

b. If a very high resistance or infinity is indicated on the meter, the sender may be "open" or not grounded. Check that sender and fuel tank are grounded by placing one probe of Multi-Meter on sender ****** and the other probe on crankcase. Meter must indicate one ohm or less. Replace sender if one ohm or less was present. If a higher resistance is present, check for poor connection on ground wire.

Fuel gauge dont work

Hi Anonymous, always check your instrument fuses first also you could have a faulty sending unit or guage, there could be a problem with your wiring. On models with the fuel gauge posing as a left hand fuel cap the gauge is a press fit do not try to unscrew it, simply ample force lift up in a rocking motion to remove gauge. Disconnect wires to the gauge and with a set of positive and negative jumpers from the battery connect the positive jumper and flash the negative, gauge should peg full, if not replace gauge. With a test light check for power to the sending unit, then remove the sending unit and manually operate the float arm slowly with the correct wiring hooked up to the fuel gauge and sending unit and the ignition on, the gauge should respond accordingly if not replace the float arm assembly. The fuel gauge indicator will peg on full when the bike is turned on, but will then swing erratically as the bike is ridden. The bike is an '02 Electra Glide Standard.

If you will contact me directly at I'll send you a complete trouble shooting guide to a fuel gauge. It's for Dyna Wide Glide but it should be the same gauge just mounted a bit different. Don't forget to remind me of what you need.

Good Luck
