Starter clutch. Not uncommon on Suzuki. Not a budget killer if you can do it yourself. Get a service manual.

SOURCE: solenoid just clicks and starter doesn't engage

Does your starter have a good ground now after the paint job??? If you jump from the battery to the starter side of the solenoid, do you get any results?

If you have good power and the starter is known good, your solenoid could be faulty.

A solenoid only makes a clicking or clunking sound. They do not spin.
You must be hearing the starter spinning but the starter gear has not engaged with the flywheel. That's the solenoid's job. It must be stuck on not working. Have the solenoid and the starter gear movement .
Hope this helps.

Where is the fuse relay for a 2003 Toyota Matrix

The solenoid located on the starter most likely has a wire either not connected,or open or the solenoid itself is bad(Check the wiring with known good pictures of the assembly and then use an inspection mirror to check that the wiring is securely mounted and then go from there(starter draw tests, jumper wire the solenoid itself)Its seems to be that the poles in the relaying mechanism in the solenoid aren't drawing the starter bendix in order for the spinning motor to engage the ring gear itself, thus you only hear the motor whirring but no magic,Jason...

Starter not engaging

The starter solenoid mounted on top of the starter has two functions, as the key is operated the solenoid slides the starter pinion to engage the flywheel, THEN operates heavy duty contacts to power the motor. The solenoid is not engaging the pinion.1726daf9-e191-4168-8e99-cab63cae5995.gif

Starter just spins

The replacement starter may not be engaging the ring gear completely or at all. Sometimes it is necessary to shim the starter to fix this. Another possibility is that the starter attaching hardware is loose, allowing excessive play.

New starter installed spins but wont engage ingine

The starter sprocket wheel is thrusted into engaging the flywheel by a big solenoid. That solenoid is integral part of the starter motor. If the starter turn itself but it doesn't turns the engine then either it was incorrectly installed or the thrust solenoid is defective.
Simple test: take out the starter, attach it to a bench, connect to it thew power cables from a battery (the minus one to the body, the plus one to the big connector bolt) then short the big connector bolt to the small one with a screwdriver - the solenoid should activate, the sprocket should be thrusted forward and the motor should start spinning it.
If that doesn't happen then the starter you just bought is defective, replace it. If that happens the starter was incorrectly installed on the engine. Reinstall it correctly.

My 2001 eclipse makes a strange roaring sound and wont turn over when i try to start?????

If I had to guess, I would say that the starter is not engaging the engine. When you turn the key to start, it energizes the starter and a solenoid that "pulls" the starter gear into the flywheel gear to turn the engine ovr. I suspect the roar is the starter motor turning and not engaging. You need to replace the solenoid, on some cars it is part of the starter and not available by itself.

When I try to start my 1991 dodge dakota it clicks before turning over and sometimes it won't turn over. I wanted to run a temporary bypass from the starter to check it but my repair manual doesn't have a...

the sound you hear is the starter solenoid engaging the Bendix into the flywheel, when the solenoid engages there are hi current contacts that make between the battery and the starter motor, over time these contacts burn due to spark when engaging, at the very least the battery terminal is corroded and cannot supply the current to the starter to activate, if the connections at the battery are sound, then the solenoid must be replaced, the starter is located underneath, and to one side or the other of the bell housing, follow the cable from the positive side of the battery down to the starter, you cant miss it, the solenoid is located on the top side of the starter and can be removed by removing 2 bolts on ether side of the solenoid, good luck
