Rear Fender Running Light - how to change

The running light on my rear fender no longer lights up. I assume that the first thing to check is the bulb, but I do not see how to get to it. This is the running light on the rear fender, well below the tail light cluster (which has two screws). Do I pry off the red lens? This just does not feel right, so I was wanting to ask before I break something.

SOURCE: 1995 FLSTC Right Rear running light doesn't...

The only "mystery box" that I can think of is the turn signal cancelling unit. It controls most of the lighting on your bike. The box is about an inch and a half wide by about three inches long, little over half an inch thick.
Disconnect the plug on the end of the box and check the pins to make sure they're clean. Also check for any sign of a short between the box and the light. I've seen people buy the box, and they ain't cheap, only to find out that they had a short somewhere in the wire. If you do have a short, the only thing you'll see is that the light won't work. It will not blow a fuse or anything like that. As far as I know, there is not way to test the output unless you've got a special plug made up to do so with. If you know someone that has one, swap the box out with a known good one. Last time I bought one of these boxes, it cost $150 and that was several years ago. Good Luck.

Why wont my brake lights not work

Check the wiring underneath the rear fender for damage especially if you are running a wider than stock rear tyre. The rear tyre comes in contact with the loom and wears through it. Also check for 12 volts at the rear brake light switch. I will assume that you have checked the bulb by replacement and also checked all fuses.

2011 sportster 1200 xl. rear running lights dont work.

Hi Anonymous, always check fuses and bulbs first for broken filaments. Then check the connection at the rear fender wiring harness, inspect for corroded, broken or loose pins. Use a dab of dielectric grease and repair as necessary. Check your brake relay if you have one , check your brake light switches for continuity, some models rear turn signals were single filament bulbs only, no running light. If all else fails get out your test light and start tracking the power wire from the harness connection. Keep blowing fuse for running lights on trunk, fender marker lights, tail light and front turn signal running lights. can't find bare wire anywhere.

Not necessarily a bare wire. Could just be a slight broken spot in the insulation. Check the wiring inside the rear fender. Sometimes the tire gets into the wiring harness and chews things up a bit. This usually happens on lowered bikes.

2005 harley fxdwg brake light works, tail light does not. replaced bulb, replaced tail light cover ?

The brake and running lights should run on separate wires from under the seat, through the hole in the rear fender and into a connector on the rear tail light cover. Your turn signal wires run the same path. These should all be clipped into place under the fender. I would look for a broken wire under the fender, especially at the point of the clip, or a corroded terminal in the tail light housing. The open wires are suseptable to rear wheel thrown road debris. You have easy access for a wire continuity test from the plug under the seat to the tail light cover.

Changing rear tail light bulbs The rear brake lights are not working, but the brake light on the wing is.Just recently had work done and evap. canister which is located under the right rear fender well was...

First just check the bulbs. You gain access to the bulbs from inside the trunk area, pull back any carpet in the way, the holder/socket should pop out with a quarter turn to get to the bulbs.

Running lights

Remove 3 - 4 screws on fender cover close to side marker light. Pull fender cover out a bit for you to use your other hand to reach side marker light. By twisting on one direction and here you go the light out. Replace new bulb and replace everything on reverse order.
