Question about 2003 Harley Davidson FXSTDI Softail Deuce

Won't go into gear without engine running, starter just spins without catching.

When I press the starter, it spins without turning over the engine and bike wont go into gear but if I press the starter while it should be in gear bike lurches forward like it does or should when in gear and starter just spins again, can't push start either as it will just freewheel when I release the clutch, gears don't seem to be catching at all. can you tell me why this might be.

The starter clutch needs to be replaced. An alternator sgop will usually rebuild these for 1/2 of a new one. Sounds to me like the "overrunning clutch" is bad. You'll have to remove the starter and disassemble it. The starter drive is part #31663-90 according to the latest V-Twin book I have. It may have a different number on your 2000 model.

The starter motor will not engage

Hi, Paul the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Why does my starter engage for only a second, then spin freely after that. it was removed and tested at Autozone and passed. The starter stayed engaged during the test when no load was encountered.

Hi Anonymous

What I believe you've said is that you turn the key to start, the engine turns over for a second, then you just hear the starter spinning but no engine turn over. Yes?

Then you took it to Autozone and tested it and it stayed engaged during the test. The differences, possible or real here, are the load on the starter gear end, and the electricity driving it.

There are a couple things happening in the start cycle. The motor starts spinning and the solenoid pushes the spinning gear forward to engage the toothed edge of the flywheel. If the solenoid doesn't push enough, the gear won't engage. So, one thought is that there's an issue with the solenoid - it may push the gear out just fine, but lack power to keep it pressed forward if there is back-force from the engine.

If you have a poor connection to the battery, the solenoid may not draw the current to keep the gear engaged. Checking the hot (red) wire both at the battery and where it attaches to the starter is the primary diagnostic there. Even if the battery has a good charge, the current draw if starting is the heaviest load it encounters in a typical day of driving, so the ability of the battery to dump that charge quickly in a pulse of high current is also important, and non-corroded, tightly connected wires help.

The starter gear also has a clutch in it - akin to the freewheel on the rear of a bike, or a ratchet. This lets the gear spin faster than the starter motor once the engine catches, so that the engine doesn't essentially grab the engaged starter motor and spin it waaay too fast. letting back on the key lets the fast spinning gear disengage without trouble. If there is an issue with that clutch/ratchet, that might also be allowing the gear to spin without it actually pushing - like the clicker in a ratchet sticking so that it'll spin either way.

After that.... there is likely both a relay and a fuse for the starter. Not a bad idea to check that neither is blown, or, in the case of the relay, looking sort of browned and cooked.

Hope this helps!

Starter motor just spins on a triumph sprint st 955i

As a rule motorcycle starters connect directly to a gear or through a chain that will drive that gear to turn the engine. This gear the starter connects to, is a one way clutch, in other words it will only lock in the direction the starter turns it, and it will turn freely in the other direction.
If you are positive that the starter is turnning, this one way clutch gear would be the thing to check. Usually this envolves removing one of the engine side covers to get to it. With the starter removed , you can check it by spinning the gear in both directions. If it spins in both directions is not good! Also, If you just remove only the side cover you can see if by turning the starter the gear spins. If the gear turns without engage the crank then you will know that the the one way clutch gear is no good as well. (do not run the engine, just spin it and turn it off, it's only to check.) Be known that, I do not know the configuration of this motorcycle. However, the above info is true to most motorcycles.
Hope it helps you!

I have a 1999 Gilera Runner 180FXR, New bat 12V 9 amps. Starter turns and spins pinion gear but won't engage starter ring. If it does it turns ver slow or won't turn engine over. In manual it

Yep, not enough amps to engage the starter clutch, and when ti does engage, not enough amps to turn the engine. You need a 12 amp battery.

Hi, Anonymous your starter motor is not/was not the problem that dubious title goes to the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a separate component that is activated by the starter motor it is a mechanical gear driven part that engages the clutch pack to turn over the engine.
