The starter clutch needs to be replaced. An alternator sgop will usually rebuild these for 1/2 of a new one.

Check your spark plugs, they are quite fragile & yoy may have a crack in the ceramics. Replacement is recommended.

Clean and tighten the battery terminals! Spark at the battery terminal indicates a loose connection.

SOURCE: assy of starter clutch on 2003 Harley Davidson

The starter on a late model Harley is a typical Nippondenso gear reduction type starter. They are all basically the same except for size.
To replace the starter clutch inside the starter assembly requires disassembly of the starter assembly.

I you will contact me directly, I will scan the procedure and drawings out of a service manual for you.

SOURCE: when does a speedometer stop on harley davison

Since the speeometer is electronic and gets it's "pulses" from the transmission, it stops whenever the transmission stops turning inside. Now, if one got into a situation in which he applied the rear brake hard enough to lock the rear wheel thereby causing the engine to stall, the speeometer would stop at that moment even if the bike didn't. This is my opinion.

SOURCE: 2009 Dyna Super Glide Custom starting problems:

Does the start quit turning or does it continue to sound like it's turning? If the starter quits turning, I'd suspect the battery. Take it out and have it tested. Usually no charge for this service at most any auto parts house.

If the starter sounds like it's still turning but the engine isn't, that's an indication that the "starter clutch" is bad inside the starter. This is the "one way bearing" unit that turns the engine to start it but then freewheels when the engine starts. I've seen many of them go bad. If the bike is still under warranty, take it back to the dealer before the warranty runs out. At least have a documented complaint of the problem within the warranty period. That way, if the warranty runs out you may can still get it fixed under the warranty.

How to remove starter on 97 roadking

Hi Anonymous, here is the short version, disconnect battery, drain oil and remove primary cover, hold pinion gear and after bending tab back remove jackshaft bolt, remove all wires and cables from starter, front and rear starter bolts, slide starter out between side cover and exhaust, pay close attention to starter shaft coupling orientation as it has a c-clip that is not centered. Good luck

Starter spins but won't engage

The starter on your bike uses a solenoid that also manually engages the starter gear. Try lubricating the solenoid mechanism and verify that the mechanism does not bind or stick. Once you have the mechanism freed up, check the starter again. If it does not engage, replace the solenoid (or, while you're at it, just replace the entire starter assembly).

Starter just whines when i hit the start button on my xl1200c 2004

Hi Wendywendy99, it sounds the like starter drive/clutch has gone south, it has components inside, that when spinning, centrifugal forces cause them to grab or lock into permanently fixed counterparts. The gear only spins one way and locks the other way. If you have one that spins both ways it has failed and needs to be replaced. Please visit the web site below for more help and good luck.
