Question about Harley Davidson FLHR-FLHRI Road king Motorcycles

1 Answer

97 roadking, not going into gear, starter just spinning while bike is in neutral, in gear bike just free-wheeling push the starter and bike lurches forward but then starter just spins

Starter motor is just spinning and not catching to start the motor, bike is not going into gear, seems to be in neutral all the way through the gears but if you press the starter it seems to try to start as if in gear and lurches forward as it is in gear but then just spins again without catching or starting, so bike seems to have no gears until you try to start in gear and it jumps/lurches as it should while in gear but then the starter just spins without catching or firing/turning over the engine.

SOURCE: Bike shuts off when in gear

hello and welcome
it seems that you may have a faulty side stand switch. the side stand needs to be in the up position before the bike can be started off in gear. but if not the side stand contains a saftety switch that shuts the bike off when put into gear. to verify this you can check for spark when the bike is being turned over in gear with the clutch held in.
there should be two wires associated with this switch. a green, and green with white. so when the stand is up these two wires are connected, and the switch can be tested as such. thank you.

SOURCE: Starter motor spinning but not turning over engine

take the starter off and look in at the flywheel to see if the teeth are in good shape if not the fly wheel needs replaced...if they are in good shape then the solinoid may be bad on the starter...take it to a electric motor shop they will likely test it for free

The bike pulls one it's in gear and I try to start it. when in neutral the starter wines but won't turn over motor

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. How to easily unstick a motorcycle clutch after a lay-up

The easy way to unstick the plates of a motorcycle clutch after it has been unused for a while is to put the front wheel up to a wall at 90 degrees to it, with both wheels on the ground
Get some intrepid friends to steady the bike for safety if you wish
Brace yourself for a big lurch
Start the bike in neutral, hold the rear brake on (if possible) & then with some revs, CLUNK the bike into gear, this shocks the plates apart
Then off you go

97 roadking wont go into gear while engine is not running and in neutral, starter just spins

The starter clutch needs to be replaced. An alternator sgop will usually rebuild these for 1/2 of a new one. .A thumbs up would be greatly appreciated if this answer is helpful to you. Good Luck.

KTM 530 2009 starter spins but motor will not turn over

Hi, Anonymous the starter clutch is a separate mechanical gear driven component that is activated by the starter motor, it engages the clutch pack gear or the flywheel gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one "ONE DIRECTION" only and once the engine starts allows the gear to free spin with engine rotation. If the starter gear free spins in "BOTH DIRECTIONS" then the drive gear has failed, it might be serviceable on some models but usually needs to be replaced.

Power getting to stater but wont crank over

No mention of model...so these are general comments.

First, when you say there is power to the starter, do you mean the actual starter or the starter relay (or starter solenoid). On most Yamahas there is power to the starter solenoid from the battery at all times.....power leaves the relay to the actual starter motor only when the key is on, the interlocks are satisfied and the starter button is pushed.

So if you actually are getting power at the starter motor and no rotation, and the battery is fully charged you have either a starter motor issue or an internal engine/clutch problem. Is the bike physically in neutral ...rear wheel spins? Remove spark plugs and attempt to rotate engine with kick starter if equipped, or access rotor bolt and rotate with socket...if it rotates fine...remove starter motor and inspect,

If the starter relay is not sending power to starter motor....check Kill switch is in ENGINE RUN position, bike is in neutral, and indicated on dash, and retry. If you have no neutral light showing, but it is in neutral, you need to flip the sidestand up...pull in the clutch and retryt....as there is a sidestand switch and a clutch switch that are part of in gear starting interlocks.
No neutral light indication requires testing of the neutral switch aand wiring but tryt to get the bike running first.

I have a 2001 harley davidson 1200 sportster. while riding it,it

G'day mate , sounds like primary drive / clutch basket. to find where the fault is turn the engine OFF , put it into gear and spin the rear wheel either by pushing or suspend the rear wheel , where the noise of spinning stops thats where the break in drive will be , fixing it may be a whole diferent matter but hope its just simple like clutch adjustment, ( to tight holding basket open )

97 Saturn SL2 won't turn over

Check the neutral-saftey switch.  If it is a clutch, the starter will generally engage and the car will generally lurch forward.  Most newer cars are equiped with a switch that detects when the car is in-gear & wont permit it to turn over.  Could be the clutch but go for the cheap fix first.
