Could be a few things.... check you primary chain tension, if thats not it check cam chain shoes and tension.and finally if that isnt it check your stator bolt.Mine came loose and it made noise untill it came out then it sounded like major problem at all rpm's.I was relieved to find out it was just the stator bolt.thought the bottom end let loose....Anyhow i hope one of these is the cure. You didnt say if it was comming from top or bottom... good luck!

Are you sure this isn't a valve train related noisy? Injectors aren't that loud. Use a mechanics stethoscope and listen to the noise or have a shop listen to it for you.

Tapping or knocking noise in 2009 f150 4.6 3v engine

Tell them you heard about a recall for the CAM PHASERS. When the noise is present and you rev the engine to 2000RPM the noise will fade away. This verifys the CAM PHASERS are acting up.

Usually the sound progresses to the DIESEL level. Further use can damage the engine. There is a service bulletin for this problem. Yours must be an early 2009, last I heard the problem was for 2004-2008 models with dual cams.
