95 sportster wont start. Everything was running fine until now.

I have a 1995 HD 883 bored to 1200. It was a salvaged bike that ive bought and fixed up over the winter. 80 km and everything is like new on it. The engine was running perfectly up until today. Today i tried to fire it up and it was a no go. Fired a couple times the first 2 times i tried to start it now it wont fire at all. Battery is new, fuel is flowing, but it just doesnt wanna start or fire at all. Any help or advise would be appreciated. Thanks

Do a basic test .try starting the bike, then take out a spark plug. is it wet or dry? if its dry, no gas getting into the combustion chamber. if its wet, place the thread of the pluged in spark plug against any engine metal, crank the engine and look for a good blue spark. no spark or an orange spark means ignition problem.

I have a 88 sportster 883 /1200 is what I was told .How can I know or tell for sure a kit was put in it ??without tearin it down ..It now also has a s&s short E carb and samson double tube exhaust...

There was a way the drag strips used some sort of instrument to determine the displacement of an engine without a teardown. Seems it was called a P&G tube or something like that. I've never seen one. The only way I know of telling if your engine has be bored to the 1200 cc. piston size is to take the head off of a cylinder.

The S&S carb is an old design but it's simple to tune, that's what most people like about them. The CV type carbs are much better but American riders don't like them much. Although Mikuni is making headway under the Screamin' Eagle trademark.

Now, if you bike was orginally and 883 and it was converted to a 1200, there are two ways of doing it. One, was to buy a complete kit with pistons and heads. The other was to bore the original 883 cylinders and use the original 883 heads but the pistons had to be special drop top type pistons to keep the compression to a reasonable amount. The combustion chamber of the original 883 heads are much smaller than the chamber in the 1200 head. If you don't use the special pistons, you won't be able to keep head gaskets on the engine. Wiseco makes the pistons for the conversion.

As long as the engine is running good, don't worry about it.

FUEL ISSUES WITH CARB..

the only thing i can suggest, is a sticky needle and seat, if fuel is coming out the over flow, then the float is not shutting off the fuel running into the carb, it has to go some where, so it comes out the overflow. Pressure in the tank wont have any affect at all with your problem. I would take apart the carby again, and check and clean the needle and seat.
Hope this helps

93 HD Sportster 1200 will not start!

Have you tried to bypass the starter button/switch? Use a heavy jumper wire to go between the starter terminal and the positive battery terminal. Turn the key to "On" position, make sure "Run/Off" switch is turn on. Make sure bike is in neutral. I've started guys bikes with coat hangers before when they lost had trouble with the starter button. If the bike starter turns over, you'll at least have a place to start looking for the issue. Also you said you checked the battery, what was the voltage?

We have a 93 harley xlh sportster 1200 that was rebuilt into a 1340 and dont know any thing about it can you help us figure out our first bike? We bought the bike and its our first bike ever. We know...

Are you sure it is a 1340 and not a 1200? Most Sporties that have the displacement bumped up started life as a 883 and were bumped to a 1200. That involved new pistons and cylinders, and related gaskets and tuning, that's about it.

883 Sportster burning rich

hi,it sounds to me like the bike is actually running to lean,or,you have a leaking exhaust, what happens is when you let off the throttle, clean air is drawn into the exhaust through any leaks, the next time the bike fires, the hot exhaust gasses mix with the air in the exhaust and you get a backfire when they all ignite, check your exhaust system for leaks first,if you can feel air coming out of seams etc when the bike is running then air can get in to,changing theair/fuel ratio is quite easy, simply with a screw driver turn the screw in(richens mix)untill the bike starts to struggle, then back it out untill the bike settles into a nice steady idle,if you take itout to far(leans out the mix) the bike will again start to struggle, all you have to do is find the mid point between the two and you will have the mixture pretty close to bang on.if you are not confident to do this ,take the bike to a shop and have it done,it will be a relatively short visit and wont cost much...hope this helps..cheers

1995 Harley Sportster won't turn over.

sounds like the battery has dropped a cell,it will still have power but not enough to turn the bike over properly, harley atarters use a lot of current to turn over so a slightly weak battery will cause all sorts of grief, hope this helps...cheers

Valve adjustment for 2004 HD sportster XL 883

You have the same model & year as mine - which has Hydraulic lifters as standard. My advice is a) leave 'em alone until b) You've bought a Haynes manual for the Sportster series - which tells you everything you need to know about this bike.

Starting my bike

first off bro the 883 does not become a 1200 by boring the cylinder. there is absolutely no difference in the size of the cylinder of a stock 883 or 1200. to make the displacement bigger by 317 cc's the head dome is made larger. you can make any 883 a 1200 by carving out the inside of the head to increase the volume. to make this increase in displacement by boring the cylinder would require making the inside of the cylinders bigger than the outside which obviously can't be done. your starter is probably getting hot due to poor electrical connection. most likely in the ground pathway. if you dont have good continuity the amps go way high and the starter gets hot. you can have all the voltage in the world but if you can't carry the amps then the thing will click and and overheat. check your cables and make sure no corrosion also if you painted your bike then the paint on the frame needs to be scuffed off where the ground strap connects
