Question about 1985 Suzuki GSX 550 ES

1 Answer

I have a 1985 Suzuki.I bought a new battery.It started up fine and ran fine and then it just shut down. Now power to the lights or ignition. Can you help me?

It won't turn over or any thing else. it's like you don't have the battery hooked up at all.

I would suggest you first check the battery for charge then check the fuses in the block attached to the side of the battery box if thats all ok check the wiring to the ignition if its lost all electrics it has to be between the battery and the ignition

SOURCE: fairly used suzuki bandit

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Most used 250s are ridden hard either as a starter bike or forced to max out playing catchup with bigger bikes. But unless abused, they tend to have longer usable life than the bigger ones. Often areas that would need your attention/check would be:

  • condition/level of the engine oil. An oil change would do no harm;
  • brake pads (front & rear);
  • carb and tank condition, A rebuilt/clean is a wise action;
  • sparkplug check/replacement. Note the color/condition of the ends of the plugs;
  • valve check/adjustment;
  • electrical system check which includes battery/terminals, major connectors (high amperage), regulator;
  • chain and sprocket. If adjusted against the stops, might be time for a replacement of the set;
  • fork oil seal.
Even if there are somethings you feel like needing work, the general judge wold be how you like riding the bike. Your body, sense of balance and riding style would dictate which if ever would need priority work/replacement/checking over.

Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: my suzuki won't start with a new battery? what

Greetings,
It may seem odd but make sure that new battery is fully charged and giving proper voltage and amperage. If that is taken care of check that relay with a simple 12 volt test light to see if the battery voltage is going thru both sides of the relay to the starter, if so then go to the starter wire coming from the relay and see if there is voltage at the starter when you push the start button, if there is power there your problem is probably in the starter motor itself. Be sure to put in a new fuse in the little fuse block, it may sound strange but fuses can look good but be slightly burrned at an end and allow a little power though but not enough to start the engine.
Good luck, Les

I bought a new battery, the bike road fine for a while the in the middle of my ride it started slowing down to a complete stop. I couldn't start it again, waited for 20mins, started it and it ran...

One explanation for this would be that your charging system is faulty. It is possible that the OLD battery was ok, but was not getting charged by the faulty charge system. You put in a new battery, that is part charged before sale and ran the battery flat because it wasn't charging. If you leave a discharged lead acid bettery for 20 minutes or so, it will pick up a little again and possibly let the bike start and run, but by the time you got home you had killed the battery completely.

All the facts fit, though I'm not promising that it is the problem.

Take the battery off and charge it with a charger. Now, put it back on the bike and run the bike (It should start) While the battery is on the bike, get a volt meter on it. It should read slightly over voltage (doesn't matter if its a 12 or 6 volt system, it will read a little over when the bike is running) when you turn the engine off, you should see the volt meter drop down to the stated battery voltage. If you get no hike with the engine running and drop as you power off, its a good sign the charging system is faulty. A similar test, start the bike, meter the battery and turn on the indicators, stop light and head light to pull as much power as you can, the battery voltage shouldn't dip, because the charge system should compensate. If it does dip, consider this a confirmation that the charging system is faulty.

yes, suzukis have a clutch saftey switch and won't start without being drepressed all the way in. time to replace the clutch cable. if u know which wires go to switch u can put a jumper between the 2 to the main harness, not to the handle.

If you're getting no lights then it is either the ignition switch or the battery is not making connection. Check the battery with a multi-meter. Check the fusebox with a multi-meter, any power to any fuses there with key on?

Their are a ton of things it could be. I would start out with the ignition switch, when you turn it on does it allow power to pass through? Have you check the fuses? Is the ground tight and clean?

If the previous owner had a key fob on the key I would look hard at the ignition switch first.
