Well it could be the adjuster for the cable is worn down as well as the clutch plate is warped and if that's not your problem than check out the drive shaft and transfer carrier to see if it's not full of trans fluid or laying on a slant inside the bell mount of the transmission

Testimonial: "it that a costly thing"

If you have first gear, you should have reverse. Problems could be a clip has broken in the transmission( that hold the reverse clutches) or you have burnt the the band clutch for reverse. Both are internal.

Hi Val,first of all the gearboxes for all vw are made in the same factory in germany and if one model of car was giving trouble the whole range would suffer.i.e.SEAT/SKODA/AUDI/VW.I have not heard of any specific cars giving trouble.but to answer your problem, get the linkage checked by a dealer as these tend to wear and a specific tool is required to set them up properly.and while they are under the car get them to change the oil for the gearbox.you do not need to get a NEW gearbox as a reconditioned one is MUCH cheaper.if you want to down that road.(you will still need to get the linkage set up).
hope this sorts it out for you.regards. geoff,England.

Problems with switching gear on a VW Jetta 1998 manual

It sounds like the slave cylinder for the clutch needs to be bled out first (it uses brake fluid) then if this does not help replace the clutch slave cylinder unit before transmission damage ensues. You must bleed out any air in the system after replaceing similar to how brakes are bled in acar with an assistants help.

Gearbox growl

If the engine and gearbox are vw then i would think it may be the
diff as the bolts holding it together are very weak and can break
causing gear selection problems and finally failure. If you get a reconditioned box make sure it has high tensile steel bolts in the diff otherwise after another 50-100k you will have the same problem.
