Replace the switch if possible. If not, check for continuity when the stand is up and down. It should change. The system is looking for the "up" condition. If the switch has continuity with the stand up, short the switch wires together. If there is no continuity with the stand up, disconnect the switch. The lack of a sidestand switch can be dangerous. Have it repaired properly asap.

Clutch switch bad

Clutch switch keeps it from cranking.
You can bypass the cluctch switch. Make double sure transmission is in neutral. On many jeeps, under the hood is fuse/relay box. One of the relays is the starter motor. Pull the relay. With a pair of pliers, take a paper clip and short the pins that go to starter. They wire can get hot. If the starter cranks, you might be right (see ignition switch and any interlocks - like clutch switch), if the starter doesn't crank, get a new starter.

I have replaced battery cables, solenoid, and battery with new parts and still can't get bike to turn over. All power works, lights, etc., but won't start.

Probably the interlocks preventing the start....typically on a Yamaha street bike...

First...is the Engine Stop switch ON (the kill switch)
Is the bike in Neutral and does it show as neutral on the dash....
if so it SHOULD crank....however sometimes a relay hangs up....so try the alternative..
you can start it in gear but only if...
a) The sidestand is up -theres a switch to detect its retracted to its resting place
b) the clutch is pulled in -thers a clutch switch on the lever that detects the lever is pulled in.

If the bike was in neutral but only starts with clutch in and sidestand up, there is an issue with a relay.

If none of the above allows it to start....your tip over switch may be bad, loose connection etc.
Let us know how you make out.

Hello, I have a 1985 suzuki cavalcade, it died on the side of the road and wouldnt start, put a new battery now I have lights ect but nothing happens when I push the start button so I checked the buttton...

You say "Would not Start". Does that mean it would not crank on the starter or would crank, but not fire?
To start these bikes, The bike must be in neutral, kill switch on the right handlebar in run, sidestand up (mainly for 1987 models) press the starter (there should be a "clicking from under the seat, fuel pump priming the carbs) when the clicking stops, pull in the clutch, there is a safety switch in the clutch lever that anly allows the starter to work with it pulled in. (if it has been bypassed, then the bike will start without the clutch lever pulled in and not allow the carbs to prime, causing the starter to operate for longer duration. ALSO, the cruise control will not work (only fitted to the LX

Starter wont turn.

Hi and welcome to the site,

Initially, have the battery externally charged, checked and load tested.

Offhand, if the battery is fully charged/new and:
  • the electrical is completely dead, check the main fuse inside the starter relay;
  • if there is just a clicking sound, check, bypass (test), replace the starter relay;
  • if there is no clicking sound, check the start button switch, the engine ON/OFF switch, the sidestand and/or the clutch switch.
Of course if bypassing the starter relay and still the starter motor will not spin, then possibly a starter motor concern or more particularly the carbon brushes and/or the commutator segments.

Good luck and thank you for asking.

I have a zx900 2001 kawaski no start

hi this may help,check the voltage of the battery first,should be at least 13.2 v static,and on a completly different approach,check that the sidestand and clutch lockout switches are functioning properly,particularly the sidestand one,they are prone to failure and when they do they wont let start current through to the starter relay..hope this helps..cheers

2002 r1 code 19 on speedo and no fire

19 is associated with the sidestand interlock

The bike must be in neutral or have the sidestand up. These interlock the starting cut-off relay.
Does your neutral light work? If it does not, that needs to be resolved, but bike should still start if the sidestand switch is made (stand is up).
If bike still does not start, then you may have problem with the diode assembly or the starting circuit cut-off relay.

Ninja 250 wont start

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially:
  • check for the presence of IGN+12 on one of the terminals of the ignition coil;
  • check that the other terminal has a pulsating voltage when cranking;
  • verify that all connectors are plugged in tight and no corrosion on the pins/terminals specially on the pulser wires;
  • exercise the sidestand and spray WD40 on the sidestand switch;
  • ensure that the neutral light is lit when starting;
  • exercise the clutch lever and spray WD40 on the clutch switch;
  • try starting with the clutch lever pulled.

Please postback results of tests.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
