"only one click when I try to start it"

Sounds like a bad starter relay, about a $10-$25 part.

SOURCE: Won't start?

With just this info. Not knowing if the engine is stock or has bigger cams or high comp pistons.I would say check the starter solenoid by running jumper wire from one side to the other.then check ALL connections for corrosion and tightness

SOURCE: 2006 sportster 1200 low won't start.

If I understand the question, the battery is 12 volts, but if U put a volt meter on it, it should read at least 12.5 if its good. When U fire up the bike, it should go up to about 13 + volts. Often, a new battery needs to be charged.

Have you tried to bypass the starter button/switch? Use a heavy jumper wire to go between the starter terminal and the positive battery terminal. Turn the key to "On" position, make sure "Run/Off" switch is turn on. Make sure bike is in neutral. I've started guys bikes with coat hangers before when they lost had trouble with the starter button. If the bike starter turns over, you'll at least have a place to start looking for the issue. Also you said you checked the battery, what was the voltage?

Starter just clicking

It clicks repeatedly while holding the key in Start, or just clicks once?
Sounds like the solenoid for the starter is kicking in, hence the click noise, but the starter itself is either stuck or dead.

Wont turn over

First thing always is charge the battery. The top of the battery reads the proper amperage, and motorcycle stores will push their trickle chargers, or battery tenders, which won't actually charge it. Please make sure you disconnect the battery before you charge it.

sounds like the battery doesn't have enough power.
Battery may be bad, or your charging system is bad.
If the bike was sitting for a while not being ridden (longer than 3 weeks) then the battery is probably dead.
go to a local powersports shop and ask them about a "trickle charger" this is what you plug the bike into when you park the bike for a long time like the winter. You can dfind a cheap charger for about $20. It has to be a trickle charger not a regular battery charger otherwise it could overcharge and the battery could explode or even catch fire. This will keep your battery from dieing everytime you park the bike for an extended period of time.

Battery died. charged battery. now when I press the start button I get nothing? No sound at all. Almost like no connection.

This happened to me also on a 2006XL1200C. I was lax on keeping the battery charged, and I took it out of the trailer for the riding season this year, and of course, just like every other year, it didn't even start. I put it on a trickle chargeovernight, and in the morning the charger indiciated it was fully charged. I slapped it in turned the key, hit the switch, and ...nothing. I brought the battery to a batteries plus store, and they said a lead acid battery when not charged properly all the time, accumulates oxidation on the plates, which diminishes the capacity of the battery over time. A trickle charger will indicate that it has charged the battery, but when the battery is only functioning at 10% capacity, that doesn't say much. Definitely not enough to start a 1200EVO. Yep, I'm afraid that your fate is to by a new 110.00 battery, just like me. One way to confirm is to jump your battery with your car, if it starts, it confirms the battery is NG.

your car will always have something being powered but its a trickle amount[computer-entry control[keyless entry]-radio memory-etc if ur going to let it sit for a month with battery connected yes your battery will more than likely be dead when u disconnect it ur also clearing all codes and memory in computer and components auto stores sell a trickle charger/maintain charge charger for long term storage there used for any type battery boats ,cars, atvs ,planes, etc the charger maintains the charge in a battery it goes on and off when needed

Starter on 1200 L 2006 whirs but does not engage engine to start

Have the battery LOAD tested, a lot of times a battery will show good with no load on it but it can actualy be bad when tested under load. Also make sure your grounds are good clean and tight. Loose grounds is a very common problem with the 1200 sportsters.
