How do you no if the voltage reg is bad,mine is puttng out 30.5 v

The normal voltage at the battery terminals @ 2500 RPM is 14.5 to 15 volts. Sounds like time for a new regulator.

1999 Toyota Avalon battery discharge light and abs light intermittent. Changed battery and alternator no change to issue. Checked voltages with multimeter 12.73 with car off and 17.03 with car on. Ple


17v on is bad. its too high.
are you using a good voltmeter. a DMM, ? or relic analog meter.?
you put a new alternator in the car? not from autozoned i hope.
the wiring to the Alternator must be all good, them includes the case ground and battery cables, end to end, good and tight and not corroded.
the regulator is inside your ALT>
the ALT has 5 connections 1 is ground. any bad, reg can go nuts.
newer cars , go less nuts. they detect more errors and shut down
your is overcharging and will burn a battery up in no time.(heat)
wire:
Grounds good.
idiot lamp ,must be there, an working or alt may start up dead.
the lamp creates excitation currents, to boot up ALT.
wire B, goes to battery via fuse link, if this big wire fails. all bets off.
wire IG goes to 7.5A gage fuse, it must not be blown.
wire S, (sense) is 5amp ALT-s fuse, this senses battery voltage
if this wire drops in voltage the ALT will go to max. (or shut down)
toss coin there, lots of regs sub'd out in so many years, and rebuilts.

the regulator is not working right.
that means 3 things.
1: reg is bad.
2: reg is being lied to. (bad wires) even bad battery.

Test Alternator and voltage regulator


voltage regulators are inside the alternator now.. they are built in..operating voltage should be 14.5-16..depending on load requirements most tool shops have a battery tester that checks load and battery condition as well as charging of the alternator.. these go for about 25-50 bucks I use mine all the time..

I have a 2010 Oliver City CPI, motor scooter. The engine wont start. The starter seems to work and theres gas in it. Tried the kickstarter and wont start. bad spark plug maybe?


My problem started like this,I found No spark so changed coil,cdi,voltage reg,eventualy found stator at fault,check pick up strip on flywheel and pick up pin on black pick up coil,this is fixed to stator and sends spark signal to cdi,mine were both rusty/dirty,I fitted a new stator,but now have light problems..stator seems to be to strong.

1979 cb750k limited not charging battery / replaced battery same problem


You need to check the voltage Reg/Rec to see if it went bad. If it is ok then check the stator. A quick way to see if it is charging is make sure the battery is fully charged and take a multi meter and set it on dc voltage. Start the bike and put probes on battery +and - terminals. It should read around 12.8 volts. Rev the motor and now it should read 13 to 14 volts.
This tells you that the stator is working correctly and putting out voltage. If the voltage jumps higher than 14 volts or doesn't jump at all then the Reg/Rec is bad.

your voltage/reg. can be tested in a couple different ways check ground res. check res. then revs. bias on diodes you have ac in dc out it sounds like you may have a diode gone bad allowing ac curent to flow causing the wires to get hot

If the reg is in the ecu for sure, then you need a new ecu. Replace the battery as well because it is either bad or the terminals are bad and causing the voltage reg. to work overtime and burn up. Jump starting can cause this as well. Never, ever have your car running when you give someone a jump. It drives a huge load spike through your charging system.

You will have to clean the filter and clean the main motor.  I had this issue on mine and the main motor was so full of dust bunnies, that it stopped it from creating a vacuum.

you need to find the volt. reg. and the wires from the reg. go to the alt. the field doesn't get strait bat volt. but 13 or 14 volt isn't bad, but if your wires are rite than your reg. is bad. 18 volt is to high!!!
