2005 Saturn vue wants to fire but won't. Battery reads 12.2.volts prior to starting and drops to 9 volts when trying to start. replaced cap and it started on first try. it had a rough idle before...

Unfortunately the answers you have given for replacing a cap is too vague. Is it a gas cap, radiator cap, air conditioning service port cap.... Look the battery needs charged that is why the battery drops to 9 volts, a good charged battery should drop to 10 volts. Check your battery terminals or cables for corrosion. Do a voltage drop tests on both positive and ground cables. As far as not starting any more...do you mean not cranking as in no starter eengagement or cranking but not running? If it is not running listen to hear in the first 10 seconds to the fuel pump relay if it engages or listen for fuel pump...is the car getting spark?

Battery is too low, but alternator is obviously charging. Swap out the battery, or have yours tested. 10 volts is a discharged battery.

I bought a new 9.6V NiCd pack battery but after I charged it the car run only 1 min or less. I measured the pack and it shows only 4V. I'd appreciate your comments.

  • A 9.6 volt battery should read around 10 volts or higher after a full charge. If your battery only worked for a minute and has 4 volts then you received a bad battery and it should be returned for a properly functioning battery. Or your battery charger is not charging properly.
  • It's simple enough to test. Get a volt meter and set it to DCV (DC Volts). Now turn the charger on as if you were going to charge the battery. Now place the positive terminal in the positive side of the connector on the charger. Do the same with the negative side. If it does not read AT LEAST 9.6 Volts (probably more like 10.2 - 10.5 Volts) then the charger is not putting out enough to charge the battery. A new battery charger will be needed.
  • If the volt meter reads anything lower than 9.6 then the battery is bad and you will want to get it exchanged.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

regards, Tony

Your alternator should putting out 14-14.6 volts with engine running. If you only have 10 volts with engine running then your alternator is not charging take alternator back for a replacement.

2001 Aztec .no running and key problems . first could not remove key now car quit running on the road

If your battery is dead and have less then 10 volts, your engine will not run and your ignition keys will not release until you get the battery boosted to have more then 10 volts. Your alternator may have gone bad and is no longer charging 13 to 14.5 volts or there is a loose connection. A bad Battery will also cause this ti happen when it can no longer hold a charge and your going to have to repalce the battery, A battery has a life of around 4 to 5 years and a bad battery will cause a good alternator go go bad also.

Good luck and have your Alternator and battery tested at Auto Zone, they test free of charge and most likely it's time for a new battery if your battery is older then 5years.

Thank you for using Fixya and Auto Zone also Scan for DTC coders free of charge.

Will not charge

you will get some funny answers from some of these "experts " The symptoms suggest to me with out much doubt that the regulator is not doing its job correctly ,consistently.Iwould take it to an AUTO ELECTRICIAN and get it tested in situ.... there is only 4 things it can be , wireing ---battery---alternator-----regulator and of those the reg. is the only one that chops and changes. it will cost little for a sparky to check the reg ,. AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE OUTCOME

93 Buick LeSabre. Battery not charging

use a volt meter while the car is running to check the main wire or large red wire coming off the back of the alternator it should read a steady 14 volts, the volt meter must be set at dc 10 amp settings, ground the black wire to ground or a metal surface some where on the car and touch the red probe wire on the volt meter to the main terminal of the alternator as i said it should read a constant 14 volts if it doesn't the alternator is bad.

2000 Windstar no charge light

Check all connections to alt. and battery to make sure they are clean and tight, as it sounds like a loose or dirty connection someplace. Possibly something not tightened completely after battery and alt. replaced? (just enough to get the annoying light to go on occasionally)

24 volt charging problems .2 12 volt batteries 1 battery 16volts and the other about 9-10 volts

A 12 volt battery is actually 13.2 volts fully charged. If you are reading 16 volts, you are probably getting extranious voltage from the system somewhere, especially if the vehicle is running when you check the voltage. The alternator will put out about 15-18 volts to charge the battery normally, and yours may put out 28-32 volts to charge them in series, but the batteries, when disconnected, should never read more than about 13.2 volts each. Typically, it will read about 12 1/2 volts when disconnected. COMPLETELY DISCONNECT BOTH OF THE BATTERIES. If you still read 16 volts when it is disconnected, you must have a bad meter because the battery can't produce that much voltage, no matter what. (Six 2.2 volt cells connected in series inside the case.) Put the meter on a known good battery on another car that is not running and see if you get the same reading. It sounds like the other battery is almost dead, regardless, and it sounds like your series/parallel switch may be malfunctioning. (That is the switch that puts the battery in series to run the 24 volt starter, then puts the batteries in parallel to run the remainder of the vehicle on 12 volts. This is all assuming that you have a diesel vehicle with a 24 volt starter and that is why you have two batteries.
