Removing rear rotor

You'll probably want to get a service manual before attempting this one. Basically, you have to remove the rear wheel first, which means disconnecting the brake line (and then refilling fluid and bleeding the brakes once the wheel is back on). The rotors generally bolt to the wheel, but you can't remove the rotor without removing the wheel, and you need the torque settings for the large nuts that hold the rear wheel on, and a torque wrench, before starting this. Depending on where the brake calipers are, you may have to unbolt the calipers from the frame, unless the rotor will just slide out.I'd advise getting an experienced friend to help, because if you mess something up (like stripping bolts or nuts) , you 're going to run into expense and/or serious safety issues.

How do you know when to replace the rotors? how much oil do i need to replace the rear oil?

There is a specific thickness a rotor needs to be to function properly. The minimum thickness is usually stamped on the rotor itself, sometimes on the edge and sometimes on the inside. If the rotor is warped,you need to have them "turned" on a brake lathe, or replaced. You will know if they are warped when you apply the brakes at a high speed,and the brake pedal moves up and down. As far as the rear end, or differential oil is concerned, when you remove the cover and re-silicone it, you fill it until it runs out of the filler hole. Check with your owners manual to see what kind of grease it takes,and if it takes an additive in case of a limited slip rear end.

My 2002 Toyota Avalon is shaking when I apply the brakes. I have replaced the front and rear brake pads and the front rotors with Raybestos ones. It still shakes. Could the rear rotors be warped?

That's what I would imagine. It is usually the front rotors that warp due to the fact that they work a little harder than the rears. However, rear rotors can warp. If you feel the shake more in the body of the car, so in the seat and you feel like the whole car is moving and the steering wheel stays mostly calm then I would imagine the rear rotors are warped. However if the shaking is felt mostly in the brake pedal and the steering wheel shakes too then it is probably your front rotors. Shops can usually resurface rotors and it may be cheaper than buying new, so that could be an option for you.

2006 Satrun Vue, experiencing a vibration wehn brakes are applied and then when brakes released a bit of vibration is felt at take of as well. The front rotors were replaced and turned since we have owned...

I would check the rear brakes drums, they may need to be turned. The front rotors may have warped again, with turning the rotors, it removes metal from the rotor which leaves the rotor with less metal to dissipate heat, and the rotor will warp again when they get hot.

Single rear wheel - Remove both caliper bolts.. remove caliper and pads.. remove rotor.. they are usually rusted on pretty good.

Rear Dually- the rear rotors are mounted with the hub assembly.. you must first remove the rear axles.. then remove nut holding load on bearings.. then the rotor and hub assembly will come off as one unit.. removed rotor from hub..

Did you also replace the brake pads? If not, the wear from the warped rotors most likely caused uneven wear on the pads (not visible by looking at them, but apparent when you apply the brakes). This is probably causing it feel like the rotors are still warped. I don't believe your anti-lock brakes have anything to do with this.

I have a 2003 325xi........when i step on my brakes, the pedal pulsates like crazy and there's tremendous vibration. i feel like i won't be able to stop in time. it's really really scary! i got the front...

You can do a quick check yourself to see if the back rotors are warped. Warping is the most common cause of your problem and normally is the front rotors, but not necessarily the only one. All you have to do is block the front wheels of the car and jack up the rear one side at a time. With the wheel clear of the ground, turn it by hand for a few turns. If the rotor is warped you should feel some extra drag at some point when you are turning the wheel. Do both wheels and double check the front. I have seen new rotors that had to be turned because they weren't straight.
If you don't feel anything I would be inclined to look at the ABS because it can create a pulsation when it is working. Hope this helps.

What causes pulsating brakes in a 96 subaru outback legacy 2.2?

Assuming you are not referring to the pulsation experienced when the anti-lock braking system engages, you should replace the rotors and the pads while you are at it. The days of turning or resurfacing rotors are over. They are cheap.

Rear Brakes appear to be warped.

more then likely, the front rotors are warped up from stopping too fast...pull wheels calipers and rotors off. take to local garage to have them turned smooth.. they cost about 10 or 15 each to have that done... also change the brake pads.
