Brake light doesnt come on when apply hand lever

When applying front brake lever, brake light does not come on...it works for the rear brake only

Most likely it's the front brake light switch, at the front brake master cylinder.

Could be an airlock in system. Bleed and try again. also check for air at master cylinder. Bleed at banjo bolts too.

SOURCE: Rear brake light will not come on when rear brake is applied

If your brake lights are not coming when pressing the foot brake this means that there is something wrong with the switch..Have a closer look near the brake lever and you will see a spring attached to it which in turn is connected to the brake switch..Try to pull it down and if you see your brake lights working then you only need to adjust the spring setting..Else try to make a manual close connection and if it goes on then replace the switch..

Have you tried powering the brak circuit itself at bulb. If it comes on then you need to find broken wire between light and switches. Since neither work if you can trace to where they meet break should be behind that.

Hi, Manulottus before diagnosing any brake light issue always check the bulb and fuse first for integrity a brake light staying on is usually caused by the front brake light switch, which is mechanical, not disengaging. On early models moving the throttle control housing closer to the front brake master cylinder is the main fix. On late models, the switch gets tweaked and needs to be realigned. A brake light that does not come on when the brake lever is applied can be caused by a faulty switch or no continuity in the wiring at the switch. The rear brake light switch is hydraulic and it is extremely rare to malfunction in a closed circuit condition causing the brake light to stay on. Usually, rear brake light switch issues are caused by no brake pedal free play or a sticky rear master cylinder piston. A brake light that does not come on when the rear brake pedal is depressed can be caused by a faulty switch, air contamination in the brake line, or no continuity in the wiring at the switch. Fuses keep burning out; rear lights don't come on when brakes are applied. Is there a connection between these two problems?


There is a problem with your question
from what you say the brake lights do not come on when the brakes are applied --that would most likely be a faulty brake light switch
The fuse blows when the hand brake is applied indicates a short after the hand brake switch before the brake indicator in the dash that lets you know the hand brake is applied
you say that the rear light come on when the light switch is turned on--does the fuse blow then , when the brakes are applied or only when the hand brake is applied
a clearer question with a lot of detail ( make , model year , engine size etc)will get a closer answer

How do i adjust emergency brake cable on 2003 jeep liberty sport. with 4 disc brake pads.


Remove rear wheels and the brake rotors. parking/Emegency brake shoes are inside these rotors. Check shoes if worn, replace them Your Emergency brake is self adjustable.

OPERATION
A hand operated lever in the passenger compartment is the main application device. The front cable is connected between the hand lever and the rear cables with an equalizer.

The rear cables are connected to the actuating lever on each primary brake shoe. The levers are attached to the brake shoes by a pin either pressed into, or welded to the lever. A clip is used to secure the pin in the brake shoe. The pin allows each lever to pivot independently of the brake shoe.

To apply the parking brakes, the hand lever is pulled upward. This pulls the rear brake shoe actuating levers forward, by means tensioner and cables. As the actuating lever is pulled forward, the parking brake strut (which is connected to both shoes), exerts a linear force against the secondary brake shoe. This action presses the secondary shoe into contact with the drum. Once the secondary shoe contacts the drum, force is exerted through the strut. This force is transferred through the strut to the primary brake shoe causing it to pivot into the drum as well.

A gear type ratcheting mechanism is used to hold the lever in an applied position. Parking brake release is accomplished by the hand lever release button.

A parking brake switch is mounted on the parking brake lever and is actuated by movement of the lever. The switch, which is in circuit with the red warning light in the dash, will illuminate the warning light whenever the parking brakes are applied.

Parking brake is self-adjusting when the lever is pulled. The cable tensioner, once adjusted at the factory, should not need further adjustment under normal circumstances.
REMOVAL
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.


  1. Remove the disc brake caliper.
  2. Remove the disc brake rotor.
Brake Shoe

  1. Disassemble the rear park brake shoes.
CLEANING - REAR DRUM IN HAT BRAKE
Clean the individual brake components, including the support plate exterior, with a water dampened cloth or with brake cleaner. Do not use any other cleaning agents. Remove light rust and scale from the brake shoe contact pads on the support plate with fine sandpaper.

INSPECTION - REAR DRUM IN HAT BRAKE
As a general rule, riveted brake shoes should be replaced when worn to within 0.78 mm (1/32 inch) of the rivet heads. Bonded lining should be replaced when worn to a thickness of 1.6 mm (1/16 inch) .
Brake Shoe

Examine the lining contact pattern to determine if the shoes are bent or the drum is tapered. The lining should exhibit contact across its entire width. Shoes exhibiting contact only on one side should be replaced and the drum checked for runout or taper.

Inspect the adjuster screw assembly. Replace the assembly if the star wheel or threads are damaged, or the components are severely rusted or corroded.

Discard the brake springs and retainer components if worn, distorted or collapsed. Also replace the springs if a brake drag condition had occurred. Overheating will distort and weaken the springs.

Inspect the brake shoe contact pads on the support plate, replace the support plate if any of the pads are worn or rusted through. Also replace the plate if it is bent or distorted.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: On a new vehicle or after parking brake lining replacement, it is recommended that the parking brake system be conditioned prior to use. This is done by making one stop, from 25 mph on dry pavement or concrete using light to moderate force on the parking brake lever.

  1. Reassemble the rear park brake shoes.
  2. Adjust the rear brake shoes.
  3. Install the disc brake rotor.
  4. Install the disc brake caliper.
  5. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  6. Lower the vehicle.

Rear tail light stays on all the time. Is this normal (new bike for me), meaning is the light supposed to come on BRIGHTER when the brakes are applied and that function is broken, or is the light supposed...


Good news. Mine did the same thing. There should be a running light and a "brake" light all within the same bulb. Check the switches on the front brake lever and the rear brake lever. Both actuate the rear brake light. You can usually do a quick test by pushing the brake lever on the handlebar all the way out and see if the light goes out. This is what my problem was. If you poke around you will see a switch on both brake levers. Make sure they are pressed in when your not pulling (handle bar lever) and pushing (right foot brake lever). You will see a switch with a little rod on it, when you press the foot break/pull the hand brake, it will come all the way out. That is when the light comes on. Hope this helps.

Rear brake light will not work when brake pedal is applied, both front and rear brakes run through same sensor front brake applies rear light, but rear brake pedal doesnt. where is the problem?


It sounds like the rear brake pressure switch is bad. The wires for the front brake light switch are wired in parallel to the this switch. Replace the pressure switch in the metal brake line coming from the rear brake master cylinder going to the rear brake caliper.

Brake lights do not work when brake pedal or hand lever is applied..Ive checked all bulbs,circuit breakers and fuses which are not defective.If it is a wiring problem..how do I isolate the defective area?


Check the wires on the rear brake light switch. Follow the metal tube brake line coming out of the rear master cylinder going towards the rear wheel. You'll come to a pressure switch. This is the rear brake light switch. Check to see if the wires are still plugged onto the switch. One set of wires should be "hot" whenever the switch is on. The front brake light switch is simply wired in parallel with this switch.

Does this model brakes front and rear at the same time when we press just front break ?


no ...you have a rear brake pedal to control the rear brake and the front is controlled by a brake lever which supplies 3/4 of all stopping power. Dont ever slam down on the rear brake pedal just apply it gradually.

Brake light doesnt work when either or both brakes are applied


You need to remove the bulb and check to see if you are getting voltage to the socket when you hit either the front brake lever or rear brake pedal. Use a test light or a volt meter. If you are getting voltage, then the bulb has burned out on the brake light element side. If you are not getting voltage, go back to your brake light switches and see if they are working. When you pull the lever or hit the pedal, you should have voltage going through the switch. Check the fuse, with a test light or meter, to see if it is blown or not. DO NOT trust your eyes. One of those is definitely your problem.
