Hi Anonymous, if it's only half full nothing. If it's empty but still wet probably some premature wear. I once did a service on a bike and got distracted, forgot to refill transmission, hey even the best of us make mistakes. The bike came back after several hundred miles for some chrome work which included the transmission top and side covers. To my horror the gears were black and the smell of burnt oil was obvious. I found no metal ants in the bottom of case, so I installed the new covers, filled the trans with parts cleaner and ran it through the gears for a couple of minutes. Drained the parts cleaner and repeated the process a few times untill the cleaner came out actually clean. Filled transmission with fresh clean trans oil and let it go. The next time he came in for service, which did not include a trans oil change, I changed it anyways just for GP and it looked good. The customer never came back with transmission problems. Harley Davidson engineers into it's engine and transmission cases small oil traps to keep some oil left in case of pump failure or distracted technicians. I once drove my own personal bike 28 miles with a sheared pump key and no oil pressure by running it up to 50 MPH pulling in the clutch and shutting the engine off and coasting. Harleys can take a ton of abuse if it's controlled. Good luck

Transmission fill location.

The transmission and engine oil are together. Put the bike on the main stand. Sitting on the bike by your right foot there is a fill plug/cap to ad oil and below that there is a dip stick. Turn the dipstick counter clockwise to remove it. Now wipe it and stick it in (do not thread it in) pull it out and check it. If it needs oil add it. Also check the dill fluid level at the rear tire. Thanks Rod

Low transmission fluid

The only way the fluid is low, is
that you have a leak to repair

You really have to ask why that would be a problem

If you have used it with low fluid, you may have already done damage

Transmission slips in d &od with steam in cab

transmission slipping could be low transmission fluid level or need a transmission fluid and filter change.if transmission fluid was real low check for transmission fluid leaks around transmission oil pan gasket or fluid leaks around cooler lines or torque converter shaft seal. if you getting steam inside cab.your heater core is leaking.if transmission fluid level okay and filter been changed could have faulty over drive switch.

2003 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA automatic gasoline engine. shifts hard sometimes.

YOUR TRANSMISSION SOUND LIKE LOW IN TRANSMISSION FLUID. YOU HAVE A FACTORY SEAL TRANSMISSION IF SLIPPING SHIFTING HARD TRANSMISSION COULD HAVE FLUID LEAK. YOUR TRANSMISSION DONT HAVE OIL FILLER TUBE AND DIP STICK.THE VOLKSWAGON DEALERSHIP HAS TO USE EQUIPMENT TO ADD FLUID THROUGH TRANSMISSION FILLER PLUG ON UPPER SIDE TRANSMISSION PAN. IF TRANSMISSION FLUID HAS NEVER BEEN CHANGED LET DEALERSHIP CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER AND TRY TO LOCATE LEAK IF FLUID WAS LOW. ALSO MAKE SURE ENGINE FINE TUNED AND TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT IS CORRECT.

I inherited a 2006 low rider. The bike has been sitting unused since Feb 09. Before running the bike what if anything should I do to make sure it is roadworthy?

Check the oil in the engine, transmission, and primary. Check the tires for dry rot and air pressure. Check the brake master cylinders for fluid level and the calipers for leaks. Do a "once over" of the bike to make sure everything that's supposed to be tight is tight and everything that is supposed to be loose is loose. Add some fresh gasoline, fire it up, and take a slow test ride to begin with.

Fluid levels. all

Enigne oil - The dipstick is on the corner of the transmission as the oil tank is on the bottom of the transmission. The dipstick has two marks on it. The upper mark is "FULL HOT", and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Keep the oil level between the two marks when you check the oil with the bike on the sidestand.

Primary - Remove the derby cover and stand the bike straight up. The out cluch basket is made out of bright aluminum. Just inside is a dark colored round piece of metal. This is the clutch spring. The oil should be just to the bottom of this spring at it's lowest point. Do not overfill as it will cause the clutch to drag.

Transmission - On the right hand side of the bike on the end of the transmission is the clutch release mechanism. It is just behind the exhaust pipes and the clutch cable runs into it. On top of this cover, there's a plug that takes a 3/8" Allen or hex key to remove. Remove the plug and there's a dipstick on it. Keep the oil level between the two lines. Check the fluid level with the bike standing straight up.

Good Luck

Need to know how to change oil in 2000 dyna low rider-what kind of oil to use and -how to change transmission fluid and what tranny fluid to use

There are two plugs on the bottom of the transmission, one for the engine oil, one for the tranny lube. The engine oil drain is the one that is closest to the left front corner of the oil pan. The other plug is the transmission.

The engine requires three quarts of oil, the tranny takes 20-24 ounces of oil.. Check the engine oil with the bike on the side stand. There are two marks on the dipstick. The upper mark is the "FULL HOT", the lower mark is the 'FULL COLD" mark. Keep the oil level between these two marks and do not overfill.

On the transmission, on the right side of the transmission, you'll see a chrome clutch release cover. It's behind the exhaust system. There is a plug that takes a 3/8" Allen or Hex key to remove. Check the oil level with the bike standing straight up.

As for what lubricants to use, I always use nothing but Harley-Davidson oil. 20W50 Syn 3 oil in the engine, transmission, and primary on 2000 and later model bikes. However, you can use other oils such as Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil, Motor Factory, and many others. Synthetic or petroleum based, your choice. Check the website of the manufacturer that you wish to use.

Good Luck

On the right side of the bike on that end of the transmission is the clutch release housing. It's behind the exhaust system. It has a plug that takes a 3/8" Allen or Hex key to remove. It has a dipstick on the plug. Check the fluid level with the bike standing straight up. The transmission takes 20-24 ounces of lubricant.

My bike has to rev up to 4000-5000 rpm in first gear so i can get going and was just wondering if that was normal or is soemthing wrong with the bike ? 2001 aprilla rs 125

check the tranny fluids? low transmission fluid causes slippage, which could be what makes your bike rev so high to get going.
