Try revving your bike fairly high a few times while it's in neutral. you'd be amazed at how much this helps to reduce the top end ticking.

These are great little engines and do not suffer with too many things, first to look at clogged spark arrester in the muffler out let, remove and lean, check the fuel hoses have not become brittle and have cracked and are leaking, failing that check the ht leed where it runs close to the cylinder, is it arcing out? i have replaced a few ignition units, so you can never rule this out.

Engine missfire

Get your local garage to put a scanner on the car. The early s-type used to suffer from ignition coil faults. If a fault has been hinted towards a specific coil then swap to a different cylinder and see if the fault follows wich will indicate a coil fault.

Has the vehicle had its spark plugs changed? every 70.000 miles as they tend to fail if left unchanged. Intake manifold requires removing to replace bank 1 plugs.

Also check the small rubber elbow on the end of the plastic beather pipe wich runs throught the intake manifold branches. Elbow is located at the rear of the engine

Hope that helps

1998 boxter idle is perfect ,,missfire /backfire when rpm is incr

It might be injectors and/or fuel filter clogged.
Try to use injector cleaner (ask for recommended heavy duty in auto store) also I would check maf sensor.
Also misfiring/backfiring is a sigm of worn/damaged distributor cap/wiring
Please kindly let me know if this info was usefull/useless for you or you need more info
Good Luck

Knocking

The cluth itself could be warped or cracked due to driving habits or previous history. The clutch itself could be going out due to riding the clutch too much and downshifting at highspeeds. Check your U Joints too and make sure you do not have any play in your driveshaft.
