Locks up when i let off the clutch

When i put the bike in gear its fine but when i let off the clutch and start rolling it locks up whats wrong

What have you inspected so far. Thank you for the vehicle description and the symptoms but I need more details about the maintenance history, any recent repairs, and so on. This failure could be external or internal. You are the eyes and ears of this bike. How is the chain and both sprockets? Is the chain stretched and the right size? With the trani in neutral, does the bike move (role) freely? Run some tests, look at the fluid inside the gear-box. Does the fluid look ok? Do you see any metal floating around? What color is the fluid, does it look bad or burnt? Please write back, good luck.

Adjusted the clutch still put in gear and bike takes off


Has the bike just come out of storage? Often they can get sticky. What I do I can't recommend to others, I start the bike in gear and while rolling pull in the clutch and mash the rear brake hard until it frees. The alternative is pulling the clutch plates, if they're not worn or damaged, clean them up with brake cleaner, re install them in reverse order. Not a hard job, just pay attention to how they come out, put them back as they came out.

check clutch cable put back ok, is the cable adjusted so it goes completely loose when not being used. is the clutch pushrod under casing put back wrong or mechanism that clutch cable leads to under panel replaced wrong

2002 yamaha banshee, it is locking up in 1st gear, all the rest work fine. I put in a new clutch-adjusted the shift lever and adjusted the clutch many times. with no luck. with the clutch plates and...


I am not really understanding what is going on...
.. OK...With ALL the clutch components and the drive chain removed - can you (in each gear) SPIN the main transmission shaft ALOT( 20+ turns) in the correct (drive) direction?..I think its counterclockwise.

It is important to remove the drive chain and all clutch components to do this check. You are checking for a SINGLE CRACKED GEAR TOOTH .. the crack will be at the base of a tooth.

Do this check exactly as described.. you are checking the functionality of the transmission alone. - no clutch-no drive chain. If you do have a cracked tooth, the transmission will only rotate about 340 degrees in either direction.
If it was the clutch giving the problem, it would happen in ALL gears...

After the check.. repost and we'll go from there.

I just changed the clutch cable to add apehanger bars,got everything back together,but noticed the clutch handle was very loose.I preceded to adjust until it was tighter,but there is still 1" or so...


With the engine off, put the bike in gear and try to push it. If it rolls, your clutch is disengaged for some reason. You'll have to pull the end off of the transmission where the clutch cable goes in and check to find out what's wrong.

When I started my 08 Fatbob it idled fine. When I put it in gear and let the clutch out, there was a "thunk" noise and it died. I attempted to restart if and it turned over longer than normal...


Put the transmission in neutral with the engine OFF. Try to push the bike. If the bike will not roll, something has your rear wheel locked up and it's stalling your engine when you let the clutch out. Check the rear wheel and drive belt. There should be a bit of back and forth roll. You're transmission will not go into neutral. You may have a shifter problem inside of the transmission.

I just bought a 2008 ktm 105 and i can start it okay but when i pull in my clutch and push down on the shifter for gear 1 the bike shuts off.


Sounds like the clutch is not engaging. Check the clutch cable. Can you roll the bike then put in gear while it is rolling and it go? I would say adjust the clutch. Screw the adjustment out. Or unscrew the adjustment. Which is under a little black rubber boot on the clutch handle.

If your rear wheel is locked up in first and second gear with the engine running, this is not a good sign. Have you ever ran the bike without oil in the transmission? Every time I've seen this, the chain was thrown off the bike and it busted the cases. The oil leaked out of the cases and the transmission locks up. Generally, it locks in fifth gear but it could lock up in any or no gear.

Your problem sounds like something is wrong with the low gear-second gear "clutch gear". The clutch gear is gear that slides sideways on one of the transmission shafts to engage the proper gears. If the bike will roll when in neutral, these may be the only gears affected. If the bike will not roll when in neutral, your problem may be in countershaft. Either way, the transmission could be damaged.

Now, if you're talking about the rear wheel locking up if you try to push start the bike, this is because in low and second gear, there isn't enough mechanical advantage in the transmission to overcome the engine compression. Remember, you transferring torque through the transmission backwards when you try to push start the bike. Try starting the bike using third or fourth gear instead. Standing on the pegs and dropping onto the seat when you release the clutch helps.
