Wont shift into second gear

MY HD 2012 Dyna Super Glide 96cu all of a sudden keeps missing the shift from 1st to 2nd? I have to down shift and slam it very hard sometimes a few times before it will engage then shifts fine up to 6th then down fine until I go back up to 2nd again. What gives it has had all proper maintenance doesn't leak a drop of fluids? only has 7300 miles on it? Any tips would be very much appreciated. Thanks Charlie M. ;o)

Have you the habit of shifting hard when taking off. it sounds and feels good banging a hard 2nd gear but that some times takes its toll.
could have bent a shifting fork in side the tranny or the powel needs attention hard to say but slamming gears to make it work is only making it worse, if you are not familiar with the inside of your tranny take it to a shop to day before you cause any more damage

You could still have a bind in the shifting linkage or the clutch could be dragging. Take the ballcrank loose at the transmission end of the shift linkage. Check to see that the shift lever moves freely. If not, find out why and repair it.

To adjust the clutch, find the rubber bellows cover that protects the clutch cable adjuster. Slide the cover up or down to access the adjuster. Loosen the lock nut and turn the cable adjuster inwards to get as much slack as you can in the cable.

Then, stand the bike straight up and remove the derby cover. Check the oil level in the primary. It should be no higher than the lower edge of the outer clutch basket. Loosen the lock nut in the center of the clutch assembly. Turn the clutch adjuster screw inwards until you feel a resistance. DO NOT FORCE THE SCREW OR YOU'LL DAMAGE THE INNER CLUTCH HUB. Turn the screw out and back in until you feel the resistance several times or until you are sure of what you're doing. Once you feel the resistance, turn the screw back out 1/2 turn. Tighten the lock nut and put the derby cover back on.

Go back to the cable adjuster and turn the adjuster barrel outwards until you have about an 1/8" freeplay. Work the clutch lever a few times and recheck the freeplay. Lock the lock nut and replace the rubber boot.

bent selector fork on the gearbox, and that would be a full engine strip no doubt about it, any more use of it will cause a screwed gearbox and thats mega money!

get it to a mechanic or buy a haynes/clymer manual to help.

Hi, Anonymous the best way to jump-start your bike is to use a jumper battery and cables, if available, before trying to push start:
1. Your battery connections must be clean and tight.
2. Jumper cables should have 8 or 6 gauge wire.
3. Only use a known good fully charged jumper battery.
4. When jumping from an automobile the engine "MUST" be off.
5. Connect the positive cable first.
6. Let the bike battery charge for 1 minute before starting.
7. Once the bike has started, remove the negative cable first.
8. If no battery is available you can try to push start.
9. Always look for a downhill slope if available.
10. Shift into 2nd gear clutch in and have someone push you then stand up on the footpegs and slam your buttocks into the seat exactly at the same time let the clutch lever out.

Its a gear shift issue.

The shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this occurred then its shifter assembly alignment issue.
