There shouldn't be a problem with the valve covers. The timing marks on the cams point towards each other when it is at TDC.

Timing problem we think?

Mark the timing belt as well with the marks on the crank and cam.
to make sure it is not slipping and staying in place during the install.
I hope your valves are not bent. If they are not and you checked the above and still the same, then and only then I would put the belt back the way it was with that tooth off.

99 a4 2.8 audi quattro just put heads on car set timing all timing marks and holes line up ,when turning engine over by hand u can here valves clicking on cam on drivers side head.cam not set right ?

i have a 99 audi a4 2.8 quattro i got the car and the timing belt snapped or somthing idk before i got the car but i ended up swapping the heads from a junkyard i had engine code AHA heads which had severe bent valves i did a compresson test and came back bad and swapped them from a vw passat with ATQ heads got all the head gaskets and all gaskets off ebay...the timing belt making sure everything is lined up correctly is crucial if it looks the slightest bit off on the cams you better do it again there tricky the marks for the cams are under the valve covers on the back side of the heads each cam will have a small square notch the should line up perfectly with the lines if they dont somthings not right on the heads on the flywheel/crankshaft pully..idk what its called theres a mark down there too that lines up with the flywheel/crankshaft pulley and plastic cover ..but i remember i lubed all the cams and valves down with oil before i put the the valve covers back on i remember mine tapped a little bit on first start up but it got quieter and quieter within 5 min of ideling ...also make sure you dont have the timing 180 degrees out i guess i got lucky make sure i think #1 is on compression stroke not exaust stroke

if you hear really loud tapping if it were me i know you not gonna wanna hear this but id pull the valve covers again and make sure 100% positive all marks on cams are perfectly lining up if it looks to be off a tooth you possible could have a bad timing chain tensioner on that driver side

2001 toyota camry valve timing instruction

With a loose tensioner...There are timing marks on the crank. Line it up, run your belt up and around cam pulley which will also have timing marks. If it is duel cam marks will line up with each other. Keep all the slack of the belt pulled to the side of the tensioner. Release the tensioner and confirm marks. Turn motor through a revolution by hand and reconfirm marks are lined back up. Put it all back together.

IS A 2001 VOLVO S80 2.4 MOTOR A NON INTERFERANCE MOTOR

autodata publication 2012 states that it is an interference engine in which there is a possibility of valve to piston damage in the event of timing belt failure. It is mostly to occur.
if you are removing the belt as a precaution then make sure all the timing marks line up prior to belt removal and once the belt has been removed do not move anything
If the belt has broken you may check for bent valves by placing the head upside down and putting fluid into the combustion chambers around the valves . If it runs out then the valve is damaged
If you find one then check the lot
Basically it is professional mechanics to assume that the valves are bent anyway and have them checked before reassembly of the head.

I replaced the head gasket on my nissan pick D21 1987 but I cant get the timing right i have all the marks like the book says but it will not start im i doing the timing wrong what should i do

did you adjust the valves and are you sure after you put belt on and have it tensioned that you ran the motor around by hand at least 2 full revolutions?

if you do this and then find the marks are off...you either got it wrong to begin with, or the timing belt is stretched...hope you didnt try to reuse the timing belt...anytime ya take one off you should change it

When putting new cylinder head howmany valves need to be open?

not sure what your asking but this is an overhead cam motor which means the valves that are on the high lobe of the cam are going to be open when you install the head onto the motor and there is nothing you can do about this.just make sure the crank timing marks are aligned were they should be and the cam marks are aligned when you install the head so as not to have to turn the motor much until you get all the timing marks properly lined up and the timing belt on.

2001 Passat 1.8T brook the time belt

Sometimes you must install the timing cover temporarily with the crank pulley to ensure you are at true Top Dead Center line up the notch on the pulley with the pointer on the timing belt cover or pointer on crankshaft cover I had a problem with a dual cam Honda in which the marks on the engine block where slightly off. you must ensure that both intake valves and exhaust valves are shut one cylinder #1 by turning the cams in the appropriate direction, from your description of the situation it sounds like when it runs poorley it is off by one tooth, when you move forward a tooth it runs but poorly make sure you are moving both cams if equipped with dual cam, both cams should be in the exact same visual location in other words all valves completly shut, be careful not to move lower shaft after lining up the crank pulley to cover pointer marks, after resetting turn the engine over two full turns then recheck all markers.
