I have a 1997 chevy tahoe 4x4 how do i change the fuel pump?

  • Disconnect the cable to the battery's negative terminal with a socket wrench. Loosen the filler cap on the fuel tank to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank. Drain the fuel tank by siphoning the fuel into a gasoline container with a hose. Raise the rear of the vehicle with a jack and support it on jack stands. Release the clamps on the hoses for the filler neck and vent tube of the fuel tank. Support the fuel tank with jack stands and detach the support straps for the fuel tank. Lower the fuel tank slightly and disconnect the electrical connections and hose on the fuel tank. Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.

  • Turn the retaining ring on the fuel sender assembly counterclockwise with tool . Remove the retaining ring. Lift the fuel sender assembly out of the fuel tank and pull the fuel pump into the attaching hose while holding the bottom support of the fuel pump in place. Discard the O-ring on the fuel tank.
  • Install the new fuel pump into the attaching hose of the fuel sender assembly. Use care to avoid bending the fuel strainer since this will restrict fuel flow. Place a new O-ring on the fuel tank and install the fuel sender assembly into the fuel tank.

  • Place the locking ring on the fuel sender assembly and turn it clockwise with tool until the ring locks into place.

  • Install the fuel tank by reversing step 1. Pressurize the fuel system by turning the ignition on for two seconds and turning it off for 10 seconds. Turn the ignition on and check the fuel lines for leaks.

How to change the fuel pump

Basicaly your fuel pump located inside of gas tank, you have to lift and secure the vehicle high enough to lose and drop the gas tank!!
Before decided to do this make sure gas tank is near empty lift&secure the vehicle visual check around the gas tank make sure all fuel and evap lines are disconnected nothing hold the gas tank except holder brackets, use under jack and safely secure gas tank( do not use direct jack to gas tank use wooden piece to dont damage it)
use right size socket and wrench lose braket holdet nuts and bolts safely drop the tank and place on safe work place (no smokes or sparks)
locate to fuel pump and remove the locker pin and pull out fuel pump slowy your fuel pump should sale complete assembly so replace pump unit and be carefully complete wire connections (TIPS,,With new fuel pump make sure replace the sealing gasket with correct new one or you gonna have serivce engine light for small evap leak so make it right at first time!!))
reinstall eveything the way you removed it !!
good luck and make sure you gonna have helper around to drop the tank<

I have a gas leak and we think it may be the gasket for the fuel pump...can you help me locate it?

A 99 is most likely fuel injected, so the fuel pump is inside the gas tank. The gasket for this is a large O-ring in the top center of the tank and is unlikely to leak. Thus your leak is most likely in the line, put it up on a lift at a muffler or oil change place and look underneath for the wet spot which stinks of gas, that will lead you to the leaking spot. Gas tanks themselves can leak due to corrosion, this can be where road debris collects on top, and if you have a skid plate under the tank corrosion can build up between the plate and the tank eventually eating a hole in the tank.

    Good Luck

LEAK ON BOTTOM OF FUEL TANK

One of the hoses to the tank must be the source of the leak....drop the tank down again and look to see if you can tell wich hose it is coming from. You may have to dry off the fuel so you can see where fresh fuel is leaking from, try not to inhalt too much of it and do this outside. Also beware of any sources of ignition- no bonfires today, ok? Good luck
