Hi Anonymous, yes there is a special tool but you can also use a sharp pointed scribe to depress the tab or foot and use a razor blade to bring them back. Good luck

SOURCE: Gas tank decal

Okay, I did this with my original tank. Your decals were most likely clear coated over after they were applied (at least mine were). To remove mine I wet-sanded carefully around the perimeter of the decal (to break the clear coat). Then carefully warm them with a hairdryer and peel away (long arduous process). They will likely leave a gummy residue that will need to be removed with something like “Goo Gone” or light solvent. Then some more wet-sanding to feather the edges. You’ll need to re-clear coat the spot and buff everything so it blends together.

SOURCE: Remove plug wire from coil

I would check to see if you have spark before you try to disassemble your bike. Fouled plugs are usually contaminants in the fuel system or your heads are having problems. If you do not have a fuel filter in the bike then try putting one in as this is a cheep fix and gas should be filtered any way. Check the timing to make sure it has the proper amount of advance. Run the bike for a while and if the problem persists. Side gapping the plugs to a larger gap will also help prevent fouling. This is a trick many race car mechanics use. If none of these work, then the heads need to be refurbished.

SOURCE: I have a dent in my gas tank, I have removed it,

The top part of the fuel gauge just sits in the recess in the tank. Grab it and wiggle it back and forth while lifting up on it. It is held in by the rubber ring around the bottom of the gauge. Be careful as the wires on the bottom are kind of short. If you unpin the plug underneath the tank, the wires will come right up the tube. There are five small screws that hold the sending unit in. Remove these screws and work the sending unit and float out of the tank. Be very careful not to bend the arm. The book says to lift and rotate it clockwise but I've found that it isn't quite that easy, Just work the sending unit arm and float very carefully.

Good Luck
Steve

I want to remove gas tank for painting and troubleshoot a non working gas gauge in the process.

Hi, Granvel you could have a faulty sending unit or gauge, there could be a problem with your wiring. On models with the fuel gauge posing as a left-hand fuel cap the gauge is a press fit do not try to unscrew it, simply ample force lift up in a rocking motion to remove gauge. Disconnect wires to the gauge and with a set of positive and negative jumpers from the battery connect the positive jumper and flash the negative, gauge should peg full, if not replace the gauge. With a test light check for power to the sending unit, then remove the sending unit and manually operate the float arm slowly with the correct wiring hooked up to the fuel gauge and sending unit and the ignition on, the gauge should respond accordingly if not replace the float arm assembly. If your fuel gauge registers the incorrect amount of fuel in the tank you can try bending the float arm the necessary amount for a more accurate reading. Remove the instrument console and the front and rear mounting bolts and then the instrument wiring and the overflow hose and the fuel line at shut off valve making sure the valve is "OFF" and drain the tank and then remove the crossover hose at one side and plug line and hose and then disconnect fuel gauge connector at left side of frame under the tank.

How do i know i have a bad float in dual tanks?

Of readings are inconsistent with known fuel levels, Ground (or connect to a tester light) the sender unit wire and watch if the gauge rises.

Gas gage 4wires 1pink 3 black

Hi anonymous, these are not factory wire colors coming off the gauge, factory gauges only have three wires, go to www.officialharleyparts.com to view a wiring diagram of your bike, that being said I would first try and contact the maufacturer of the gauge if is after market and get there feed back. If there is no label or any way to identify it's origin then your kinda on your own. But in the intrest of peace and good will to all man kind, no guarantee of course, I will give my best shot. Note it would be helpfull if you start with a half empty tank of fuel. Look on the back of the gauge hopefully the wires are attached on small studs that have nuts and lock washers, and next to these studs letters or characters that identify their respective roles. Your going to need a power wire, this would be identified on the gauge with a "+" or "P" that wire would splice into the orange wire of the factory harness that comes in under the front part of the instrument panel. Next lets see if the pink wire goes to the stud marked with an "S" for signal, this would go to the center stud on top of the gas tank sending unit. And finally look on the back of the gauge for a stud marked with a "--" or "G" or "N" for ground this wire would go to the sending unit on an outside lug or screw and would have other black wires attached. If your fuel gauge also acts as a dummy gas cap the power and ground wires will already be there, coming from a tube that is made with tank and the wires exit from the bottom left of the tank. I hope this was helpfull. Good luck and may the Harley Gods be with you

I bought a used car nissan altima 2001.the fuel guage is not working.a roadside mechanic tried fixing it but is stuck.what do i do

Hi,
Usually problem with fuel gauge not working is the gas float sensor inside the fuel tank.
Check first the wiring to make sure the harness going to and from the fuel tank is not disconnected or cut off.
Check the grounding of the fuel float( ground ( - ) ), negative is the one that signals the float to send signal to your fuel gauge. Try to connect a wire in the circular metal base of the float to any expose body ground of your car ( the center terminal if you ground it directly it should move your gauge to "full" ).
Last one is to pull out the fuel float itself and look at the resistor wound, where the float contact is moving, if you have a continuity tester test it.
Finally the gauge, a service technician must handle it to remove the entire panel for removing, checking, and replacing the fuel gauge inside the gauge panel.
Hope that helps you out.
Thanks for using FixYa!

Gas guage does not work

This issue is probably caused by a faulty fuel sending unit or a bad connection by the gas tank. If possible try wiggling the fuel pump harness by the tank and see if gauge may start working. The particular harness I am referencing will contain a purple wire which is power wire to the fuel pump. This plug and harness also contains the wires that connect to the fuel gauge. This harness is located by the right rear tire by the gas tank.
